Arkansas State Park Guide 2008 - (Page 61) Arkansas State Parks River Town on the Currents of History Powhatan Historic State Park P Box 93, Powhatan, AR 72458 .O. 870-878-6765 e-mail: powhatan@arkansas.com Powhatan Courthouse GPS: 36° 4.9' 56.5" N / 91° 7.1' 9.5" W In the 1800s, this busy river port on the Black River was the chief shipping point for a large territory. In 1888, atop a hill overlooking the busy riverfront, a Victorian courthouse was built from bricks made on site. Restored in 1970 and 2005 to the architect’s original plans, this courthouse is the park’s main feature. Exhibits interpret the commerce, politics, and lifestyles that shaped north Arkansas, and illustrate the history of Lawrence County, the mother of north Arkansas counties, from its beginning to the early years of the 20th century. Take a guided tour through the park’s five buildings that tell the stories of domestic and commercial life in the 1800s here at this Black River steamboat port. You’ll tour the historic Powhatan Courthouse, Powhatan Jail, Ficklin-Imboden Log House, Commercial Building, and Powhatan Male and Female Academy, a two-room schoolhouse. The park is on Ark. 25 in Powhatan.
