PROGRAM SESSIONSSA 8:15AM-8:30AM, Technical, CC/242 Anticipatory Motor Planning Acts Involving Mouse Access During Storybook Reading Krista Wilkinson, Pennsylvania St U, University Park, PA; Kelly McStravock, Pennsylvania St U, University Park, PA; Aileen Costigan, Pennsylvania St U, University Park, PA; Kate Fleming, Pennsylvania St U, University Park, PA This session discusses alterations to aided communication patterns when users access the device via mouse. Use of a mouse involves different motor behaviors from more traditional forms of direct selection. After reviewing the relation of motor to communication development, we present videos illustrating the decoupling of the motor planning phase of access from the actual communication act of activating voice output. We will discuss this phenomenon from the perspective of both motor and communication function. 2135 Poster Board 31 SA 8:00AM-9:30AM, Poster, CC/Hall G Promoting Picture Exchange Through Milieu Training for a Child With ASD Billy Ogletree, Western Carolina U, Cullowhee, NC; Patricia Davis, Western Carolina U, Cullowhee, NC; Georgia Hambrecht, Western Carolina U, Cullowhee, NC; Ellen Wooten, Western Carolina U, Cullowhee, NC 2143 Poster Board 39 SA 1:00PM-2:30PM, Poster, CC/Hall G Improving Search for Emotion Symbols: Structural Characteristics of the Display Julie Snell, Pennsylvania St U, University Park, PA; Krista Wilkinson, Pennsylvania St U, University Park, PA 2144 Poster Board 40 SA 1:00PM-2:30PM, Poster, CC/Hall G AAC Navigation by Brain Injury Survivors: Prompt & Contextualization Effects Sarah Wallace, U of Nebraska – Lincoln, Lincoln, NE; Karen Hux, U of Nebraska – Lincoln, Lincoln, NE; David Beukelman, U of Nebraska – Lincoln, Lincoln, NE; Jeff Snell, Quality Living, Inc, Omaha, NE 2136 Poster Board 32 SA 8:30AM-8:45AM, Technical, CC/242 Processing & Learning in Multiple Modalities: Applications for AAC Filip Loncke, U of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA; Jane Hilton, U of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA; Pei-Lin Weng, U of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA; Paul Corthals, Ghent U/U Coll Ghent, Ghent, Belgium; Marwane El Fallah, U Lille3, France, Villeneuve d'Ascq, France; Claire Leconte, U Lille3, France, Villeneuve d'Ascq, France Most AAC applications use multiple representations of concepts; orthographic, pictographic, auditory, and gestural information are often combined. The underlying hypothesis is that multimodality facilitates learning and processing. Clinicians want to use multimodality in strategic way to increase learning and speed of processing. This presentation will discuss the results of two coordinated studies in two countries (the United States and France) in which learning curves of modality-related learning are compared. In combination with materials and techniques from larger speech-generating devices used by persons with aphasia, they open new possibilities for facilitating convenient, flexible, and effective functional communication, especially outside the home. We discuss these possibilities, showing newly developed applications, discussing user experiences, and describing current free application dissemination. 2139 Poster Board 35 SA 10:00AM-11:30AM, Poster, CC/Hall G Literacy Practices of AAC Users: Comparison of Parent & Teacher Report Barbara Weitzner-Lin, Buffalo St Coll, Buffalo, NY; Sarah Gallivan, Baker Victory Svcs, Buffalo, NY; Nadeen Tutuska, Baker Victory Svcs, Buffalo, NY 2148 Poster Board 44 SA 3:00PM-4:30PM, Poster, CC/Hall G Aided & Unaided Symbol Use by a Person With Autism Donald Fuller, Eastern Washington U, Spokane, WA; Andrea Carrillo, Capistrano Unified Sch Dist, San Juan Capistrano, CA 2140 Poster Board 36 SA 10:00AM-11:30AM, Poster, CC/Hall G Smart Ease: Content-Based Activities Addressing National Standards Allison Yates, Advanced Multimedia Devices Inc, Youngsville, LA 2149 Poster Board 46 SA 3:00PM-4:30PM, Poster, CC/Hall G Use of Memory Aids: Examining Evidence & Practical Application Jana Mueller, Baylor Inst for Rehab, Dallas, TX; Kimberly Osborn, Baylor Inst for Rehab, Dallas, TX; Mark Barisa, Baylor Inst for Rehab, Dallas, TX 2133 Poster Board 29 2141 Poster Board 37 SA 8:00AM-9:30AM, Poster, CC/Hall G Aided Communication: A Battle Against Speed Limits & Preselected Symbols David Wetterbro, Linköping U, Linköping, Sweden; Janna Ferreira, Linköping U, Linköping, Sweden SA 10:00AM-11:30AM, Poster, CC/Hall G Telecommunication & AAC: Scanning Versus Direct Selection Elizabeth Hanson, U of South Dakota, Vermillion, SD; Emily Goldhammer, U of South Dakota, Vermillion, SD 2134 Poster Board 30 2142 Poster Board 38 SA 10:00AM-11:30AM, Poster, CC/Hall G The AAC-RERC Writers Brigade, 2004-2008 Sarah Blackstone, Augmentative Communication Inc., Monterey, CA 2150 Poster Board 47 SA 8:00AM-9:30AM, Poster, CC/Hall G Peer Training Using AAC Devices for Children With Cerebral Palsy Myunghee Lee, Joongbu U, Kumsan-gun, Korea; Soojung Chae, Purdue U, West Lafayette, IN; Eunhye Park, Ewha Womans U, Seoul, (KR) SA 3:00PM-4:30PM, Poster, CC/Hall G Assessing Early Expressive Communication Across the Life Span Kathy Thiemann-Bourque, Schiefelbusch Inst for Life Span Studies, Lawrence, KS; Nancy Brady, U of Kansas, Lawrence, KS; Leslie Olswang, U of Washington, Seattle, WA; Patricia Dowden, U of Washington, Seattle, WA ASHA 2009 x Exhibits & pro gr am sEssions guidE
