These patients often are misdiagnosed, have multiple emergency room visits, and have been prescribed multiple medications. Behavioral treatment has been shown to be effective with these populations. This hands-on seminar will focus on training evaluation and practical treatment techniques for dealing with these unique disorders. This study explored the biopsychosocial consequences of laryngectomy. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 13 laryngectomees. Interviews were transcribed and qualitatively analyzed. Five major themes and 48 subthemes emerged. Results revealed a complex interplay of communicative, emotional, and physical factors that affect C-RQOL. Smoking and the use of smokeless tobacco are the highest risk factors for oral, head, and neck cancers. The demographics of NASCAR fans indicate that they are at high risk, with the increased incidence of smoking/ smokeless tobacco. Two telephone follow-ups were conducted with participants to determine the impact of the screening on reducing and eliminating the use of tobacco products. Another aim was to see which assessment tools were used to assess loss of voice or speech function(s). Medline and Embase were searched (June 1991-March 2009) for the terms: H&N cancer, chemoradiation, speech, vocal or articulatory function, intelligibility, or a variation of these terms.
