PROGRAM SESSIONSFR 11:00AM-12:00PM, Seminar 1 HR, CC/349 CMV & Unilateral Hearing Loss (HL): Demographics, Characteristics, & Management Faye McCollister, UAB, Birmingham, AL; Karen Fowler, U of Alabama - Birmingham, Birmingham, AL Congenital CMV, the leading non-genetic cause of childhood HL, results in 21%-25% of all pediatric HL (Morton, 2006). This HL is characterized by progression, fluctuation, delayed onset, and variable configurations. The virus causes HL in 11.3% of children with asymptomatic infection and 36.4% of children with symptomatic infection (Fowler, 1999). Approximately 40% of this HL is unilateral (Dahle, 2000). Characteristics and management of unilateral HL in children identified with CMV will be summarized.
