PROGRAM SESSIONS spEECh-LanguagE pathoLogY Thursday, november 19, 2009 Academic and Educational Issues (SLP) 0900 TH 8:00AM-9:00AM, Seminar 1 HR, CC/293 Improving Professional Writing Skills for ELL Graduate Students: Strategies for Success Michael Kimbarow, San Jose St U, San Jose, CA Increasing the number of bilingual individuals in the professions leads to increases in students who are English language learners (ELL). Scientific writing is challenging to ELL students. The quality of their ideas may be masked by the quality of their writing. Using the same approach with ELL students as with native English-speaking students to develop scientific writing skills is counter-productive. Strategies to increase success in this important component of academic and clinical performance will be provided. TH 8:00AM-9:00AM, Seminar 1 HR, CC/262 A Graduate Curriculum for Excellence & Leadership Lesley Maxwell, MGH Inst of Hlth Professions, Boston, MA This session describes a graduate curriculum with a systematic approach to developing the qualities of mind that are the foundation of excellence in the field of speech-language pathology. Participants will learn how to develop critical thinking, innovation, collaboration, social perspective taking, risk-taking, and reflective self-knowledge across the graduate curriculum. Specific teaching activities, evaluation measures, and outcomes will be described, with an emphasis on clinical coursework and practice. TH 8:00AM-9:00AM, Seminar 1 HR, CC/261 NeuroRounds: Teaching Professional Communication Skills Within an Evidence-Based Training Program Karen McLaughlin, U of Oregon, Eugene, OR; Bryan Ness, U of Oregon, Eugene, OR; McKay Moore Sohlberg, U of Oregon, Eugene, OR As part of their training within an evidence-based framework, graduate student clinicians should learn how to communicate practice decisions in professional, interdisciplinary settings. NeuroRounds is a training experience designed to improve students' ability to communicate treatment approaches and measurement in the concise manner required in their clinical placements. This presentation will describe the rounds method, present preliminary evaluation data, and outline the applicability of the approach across practice areas to improve students' clinical communication skills. TH 8:00AM-9:00AM, Seminar 1 HR, CC/354 Research to Improve Teaching & Learning: Views From CSD Faculty Jennifer Friberg, Illinois St U, Normal, IL; Sarah M. Ginsberg, Eastern Michigan U, Ypsilanti, MI; Colleen F. Visconti, Baldwin-Wallace Coll, Berea, OH; Hollea Ryan, Vanderbilt U, Nashville, TN; Rita Bailey, Illinois St U, Normal, IL Four faculty members with current university-level appointments in CSD departments will serve as panelists to discuss the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), their current research in this area, their perceptions of SoTL, and the application of SoTL as a tool to improve teaching and course delivery. TH 9:30AM-10:30AM, Seminar 1 HR, CC/386-387 Enhancing Success of CSD Students of Color Through Research Mentoring Robert Mayo, U of North Carolina – Greensboro, Greensboro, NC; Bernadette Mayfield-Clark, North Carolina A&T St U, Greensboro, NC; Carolyn Mayo, North Carolina A&T St U, Greensboro, NC Research mentoring programs in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) have the potential to promote long-standing relationships between faculty and students, increase student engagement with the university, encourage peer support among students, and enhance student success (i.e., retention, persistence, graduation). The purpose of this presentation is to describe an interinstitutional research mentoring program designed to enhance retention and graduation among undergraduate students of color and facilitate their admission to graduate training programs in CSD. spEECh-LanguagE pathoLogY Thursday, november 19, 2009 TH 8:00AM-9:00AM, Seminar 1 HR, CC/244 What's Your KASA IQ? Nancy Cohick, California St U – Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA; Cari Flint, California St U – Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA Standards for accredited graduate programs were recently modified. Programs must adhere to guidelines that facilitate mastery of knowledge and skill areas (KASA) relevant to the respective fields of study. This seminar addresses KASA standards for speech pathology, one means for recording students' acquisition standards, formative and summative assessment methods used at our university to document students' acquisition of KASA, and how this process has positively enhanced our academic program. TH 8:00AM-9:00AM, Seminar 1 HR, CC/286-287 Clinical Doctorate in Allied Health: Lessons for Speech-Language Pathology Ray Kent, U of Wisconsin – Madison, Madison, WI As the professional or clinical doctorate rapidly becomes a reality in several allied health disciplines, speechlanguage pathology must decide if its future includes this degree for either entry-level or advanced practice. This seminar reviews educational, economic, social, and professional issues pertaining to the clinical doctorate and recommends a plan of action. TH 11:00AM-12:00PM, Seminar 1 HR, CC/294 What Makes Gen Y Tick: Training This Generation of Learners Marie Kerins, Loyola Coll MD, Baltimore, MD; Janet Simon Schreck, Loyola Coll MD, Baltimore, MD Generation Y are individuals born after 1982. They are entering our universities and the workforce in record numbers and challenging some of our teaching and clinical training styles. Influenced by 24/7 wireless technology, some have said they are wired differently; they think in a nonlinear fashion and information must be delivered in sound bites. Research is reviewed and suggestions are presented for faculty and clinical supervisors in training this unique group of learners. TH 8:00AM-9:00AM, Seminar 1 HR, CC/352 Thinking About a PhD? Information Session for Prospective Doctoral Students C. Melanie Schuele, Vanderbilt U, Nashville, TN; Katherine Hustad, U of Wisconsin - Madison, Madison, WI; Tiffany Johnson, U of Kansas, Lawrence, KS; Robert Mayo, U of North Carolina - Greensboro, Greensboro, NC; Jim Montgomery, Ohio U, Athens, OH; Janna Oetting, Louisiana St U, Baton Rouge, LA Session sponsored by ASHA's Research and Scientific Affairs Committee. This session provides information for persons interested in PhD study. In the first hour, panelists will provide an overview of factors to consider in the selection of a PhD program. Topics include goals and nature of research doctoral study, choosing programs and mentors, the importance of a peer group, prospective student competencies, diversity issues, and research training. The second hour will be questions/answers and discussion between audience participants and panelists.
