PROGRAM SESSIONSTH 8:00AM-10:00AM, Seminar 2 HR, CC/296 Applications of Magnetoencephalography to Language Processing & Language Rehabilitation Joshua I Breier, UT Hlth Sci Ctr, Houston, TX This session was developed by the Convention Program Committee. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) directly reflects sources of neuronal activity generated by large neuronal aggregates, characterizing the spatiotemporal properties of cortical activation associated with sensory function. The basic principles of MEG as well as its application to imaging primary auditory and higher level language function will be discussed. Data from specific projects involving the application of MEG in acquired and developmental language disorders will be presented. 1314 Poster Board 255 TH 10:00AM-11:30AM, Poster, CC/Hall G Resting State Functional MRI & Attention Following Brain Injury Steffany Chleboun, Southern Illinois U – Edwardsville, Edwardsville, IL; Christine MacDonald, Washington U – St. Louis, St. Louis, MO; Joshua Shimony, Washington U – St. Louis, St. Louis, MO; Abraham Snyder, Washington U – St. Louis, St. Louis, MO; Marcus Raichle, Washington U – St. Louis, St. Louis, MO; Erin Foster, Washington U – St. Louis, St. Louis, MO; David Brody, Washington U – St. Louis, St. Louis, MO 1323 Poster Board 264 TH 3:00PM-4:30PM, Poster, CC/Hall G Learning Words in Adulthood: Effects of Phonological & Conceptual Factors Margarita Kaushanskaya, U of Wisconsin – Madison, Madison, WI; Jeewon Yoo, U of Wisconsin – Madison, Madison, WI; Samantha Smith, U of Wisconsin – Madison, Madison, WI; Stephanie Van Hecke, U of Wisconsin – Madison, Madison, WI spEECh-LanguagE pathoLogY Thursday, november 19, 2009 Motor Speech in Adults and Children 1324 TH 10:30AM-11:30AM, Seminar 1 HR, CC/296 Think Tech: Using Everyday Technologies in the Motor Speech Clinic Rupal Patel, Northeastern U, Boston, MA; Christopher Dromey, Brigham Young U, Provo, UT; Douglas Parham, Wichita St U, Wichita, KS This session was developed by the Convention Program Committee. Motor speech research often involves instrumentation that is both complex and expensive. Unfortunately, practicing SLPs rarely have access to the advanced hardware and software tools routinely available in laboratory settings. This presentation will provide SLPs with practical ideas for using readily available technology to help assess and treat motor speech disorders. The presenters will demonstrate solutions and discuss their clinical relevance. 1315 Poster Board 256 TH 1:00PM-3:00PM, Seminar 2 HR, CC/293 Utilizing Principles of Neuroplasticity to Guide Language Rehabilitation Peter Meulenbroek, U of Wisconsin – Madison, Madison, WI; Anastasia Raymer, Old Dominion U, Norfolk, VA; Lisa Edmonds, U of Florida, Gainesville, FL; Laura Murray, Indiana U, Bloomington, IN This session was developed by the Convention Program Committee. Neurorehabilitation research, including aphasia treatment research, has been influenced by several bodies of basic research in the neurosciences and cognitive sciences. In this session, several principles of neuroscience that have direct or indirect relevance to rehabilitation of cognitive domains in humans will be reviewed. We will then describe in three examples how aphasia treatment research has been influenced by these neuroscience principles. Speech-language pathologists can serve a vital role in the care of these complex clinical cases. This session will review updated information on the epidemiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical signs/symptoms, and management of ALS. There will be specific discussion regarding medical treatment issues, rehabilitation, and current research/clinical trials. 1320 Poster Board 261 1312 Poster Board 253 TH 1:00PM-2:30PM, Poster, CC/Hall G Processing Speed & Masking Release After Traumatic Brain Injury Miriam Krause, U of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN; Peggy Nelson, U of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN; Mary Kennedy, U of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN TH 8:00AM-9:30AM, Poster, CC/Hall G Dual-Task Effects on Language & Processing Speed: An Aging Study Amy Teten, U of Nebraska – Omaha, Omaha, NE; Leslie Decker, U of Nebraska – Omaha, Omaha, NE; Heather Smith, U of Nebraska – Omaha, Omaha, NE 1321 Poster Board 262 1313 Poster Board 254 TH 3:00PM-4:30PM, Poster, CC/Hall G U Txt 2: Variables Affecting Lexical Organization of Text Messages Pamela Smith, Bloomsburg U, Bloomsburg, PA; Christine DeRosa, Bloomsburg U, Bloomsburg, PA; Bethany Schwing, Bloomsburg U, Bloomsburg, PA TH 8:00AM-9:30AM, Poster, CC/Hall G Discourse Coherence in Healthy Younger & Older Adults Anthony Koutsoftas, Arizona St U, Tempe, AZ; Heather Harris Wright, Arizona St U, Tempe, AZ; Gilson Capilouto, U of Kentucky, Lexington, KY 1322 Poster Board 263 TH 1:00PM-3:00PM, Seminar 2 HR, CC/291-292 Management of Dysarthria in Acquired Brain Injury Kathryn Yorkston, U of Washington, Seattle, WA; David Beukelman, U of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE; Mark Hakel, Madonna Rehab Hosp, Lincoln, NE This seminar presents an overview of issues that clinicians typically face when managing dysarthria following acquired brain injury. Video samples are used to illustrate various types of dysarthria associated with traumatic brain injury and brain stem stroke and common assessment and treatment techniques. Topics related to predicting recovery, selecting appropriate treatment approaches, and dealing with associated problems are described. Approaches to measuring treatment outcomes are reviewed within the International Classification of Function Disability and Health framework.
