Many augmented communicators can use generative language for communication if they are given the opportunity. Supporting an augmented communicator to learn generative language for communication is complex. The clinician must be knowledgeable about communication independence and competence, as well as about language development. DELTA is designed to provide support to the development of generative language in AAC. FR 8:00AM-9:00AM, Seminar 1 HR, CC/354 Facilitative Co-Construction in Personal Narratives With Children Who Use AAC Patti Solomon-Rice, San Francisco St U/U of California – Berkeley, San Francisco, CA; Gloria Soto, San Francisco St U, San Francisco, CA Adult co-construction with children who use AAC has been found to contribute to increased child communication competence in general, but few studies have examined adult co-construction during the telling of personal narratives. This presentation explores the SLP's use of co-constructive strategies during personal narrative storytelling with children who use AAC. The presentation concludes that use of child-centered co-construction strategies may be a facilitative factor in supporting the personal narratives of children who use AAC. 1521 Poster Board 23 FR 3:00PM-4:30PM, Poster, CC/Hall G An SLP's Guide to Establishing Effective Community Support Groups Laura Willis, Auburn U, Auburn, AL; Elizabeth Zylla-Jones, Auburn U, Auburn, AL FR 8:00AM-9:00AM, Seminar 1 HR, CC/357 Not a Bandage: Advocating AAC Assesment for Aphasia Holly Schneider, DynaVox Technologies, Pittsburgh, PA In this session, we will discuss the parallel nature of the goals for aphasia and AAC treatments. We will highlight AAC strategies to improve the ability of individuals with aphasia and review the current research regarding AAC and aphasia. We will explore what traditional and needs assessment tell us about AAC skills and how to expand our assessment to include a more specific AAC-aphasia assessment protocol. Participants will leave with informal assessment tools and resources. 1522 Poster Board 24 FR 3:00PM-4:30PM, Poster, CC/Hall G Using Wimba Live Classroom in an Online APD Course Mary Ellen Tekieli Koay, West Virginia U, Morgantown, WV; Carolyn Whisler, West Virginia U, Morgantown, WV; Kara Miller, West Virginia U, Morgantown, WV FR 9:30AM-10:30AM, Seminar 1 HR, CC/243 The Difference Between World Knowledge & Language Knowledge Bruce Baker, U of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA; Eric Nyberg, Carnegie Mellon U, Pittsburgh, PA Sometimes it can be useful to separate the various processes of a complex system. The purpose of this paper is to look at two areas involved in communicative competence: world knowledge and language competence. Both are needed for expressive and receptive communicative competence. Communicative competence will be discussed from both the human and the computational theory of language. ASHA 2009 x Exhibits & pro gr am sEssions guidE
