The ASHA 2008 Catalog - (Page 29) Aud/SLP School-Based Service Delivery Response to Intervention: An Alternative to Special Education Judy K. Montgomery, PhD, CCC-SLP Barbara Moore-Brown, PhD, CCC-SLP Students who have difficulty in the general education classroom must wait to fail before they can receive services. When these students are referred for special education testing, school personnel typically need several weeks to test them and determine if they qualify for special education. The response to intervention (RTI) model suggests that using that time for teaching would have much more impressive results—and would help many students avoid special education. Learn how SLPs can work as part of an RTI team, with special focus on a language/literacy team using the five building blocks of reading from the National Reading Panel. Results of a 2-year study in a large, culturally diverse urban school district will be shared and analyzed for other SLPs to use. You will be able to— ■ recognize the shortcomings of the “wait to fail” model of special education ■ describe the RTI model ■ create an RTI program at your school Advanced level 2-hour audio CD and manual 0.2 ASHA CEUs (2006–2/27/2009) Item #0112845 $74 > > > ASHA member $99 > > > nonmember Respo n Intese to r venti An A Spec lternativ on ial et Judy K. Barb Montgom ara M oore-B ery, PhD, CCCrown, SLP EdD, CCCSLP Educ o ation Special Education Rules: Federal, State, and Local Requirements Lissa Power-deFur, PhD, CCC-SLP The requirements associated with special education are frequently attributed to IDEA, the federal law establishing the rights of children with disabilities and their parents. However, state and local governments have significant authority over the provision of special education services, with the result that many requirements stem from state or local policies. The discussion addresses federal requirements that may be modified by states and localities, and requirements that are solely the authority of states and localities. The program also offers approaches to advocating for change, tailored to the local, state, and federal levels. You will be able to— ■ distinguish federal, state, and local authority for special education ■ identify federal, state, and local requirements for common special education procedures ■ identify opportunities to advocate for change in special education requirements ■ describe effective advocacy strategies Intermediate level 0.2 ASHA CEUs Web/Telephone seminar Live Broadcast Thursday, March 20, 2008 (3–5 p.m. ET) Item #TL0803-IND $79 > > > ASHA member $99 > > > nonmember Item #TL0803-GRP $229 group of any size, on one connection Replay Available through March 20, 2009 Item #TR0803-IND $99 > > > ASHA member $119 > > > nonmember Item #TR0803-GRP $259 group of any size, on one connection The Pragmatics of Teaming Barbara J. Ehren, EdD, CCC-SLP Julia M. Jackson, MA, CCC-SLP This self-study suggests skills necessary for collaboration and teamwork, including outcomes, productive relationships, communication among team members, conflict resolution, and a rubric for self-evaluating your collaborative interaction. You will be able to— ■ identify unique but complementary roles of team members in educational settings ■ apply principles of group dynamics to understand the functioning of teams ■ explore strategies to work effectively with different kinds of people ■ choose appropriate verbal responses and actions to promote effective teaming in specific situations Intermediate level 2-hour audio CD and manual 0.2 ASHA CEUs (2003–9/6/2008) Item #0112550 $74 > > > ASHA member $99 > > > nonmember Save when you purchase one multimedia kit and additional manuals for colleagues. 1.888.498.6699 < < > > www.asha.org/shop 29 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=Response+to+Intervention%3a+An+Alternative+to+Special+Education+&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat08 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=Response+to+Intervention%3a+An+Alternative+to+Special+Education+&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat08 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=Response+to+Intervention%3a+An+Alternative+to+Special+Education+&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat08 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=Special+Education+Rules%3a+Federal%2c+State%2c+and+Local+Requirements+(Live+Web%2fTelephone+Seminar)&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat08 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=The+Pragmatics+of+Teaming&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat08 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=The+Pragmatics+of+Teaming&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat08 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=The+Pragmatics+of+Teaming&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat08 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=Special+Education+Rules%3a+Federal%2c+State%2c+and+Local+Requirements+(Live+Web%2fTelephone+Seminar)&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat08 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=Special+Education+Rules%3a+Federal%2c+State%2c+and+Local+Requirements+(Web%2fTelephone+Replay)&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat08 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?webcode=olsmainpage&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat08
