Aud/SLP School-Based Service Delivery A Workload Approach to Caseload in the Schools Trici Schraeder, MA Ellen Estomin, MA, CCC-SLP IDEA ‘97, medical advances, demographic shifts, and current knowledge of best practice have gradually expanded and complicated the role of speech-language pathologists in the schools. But large caseloads limit the SLP’s ability to embrace these expanded roles and responsibilities. What is needed is a conceptual shift from “caseload” to “workload,” so that total workload activities required and performed by SLPs may be taken into account when setting appropriate and reasonable caseload standards. Based on ASHA’s recently revised policy on workload and caseload size, this audio self-study presents a model for determining caseload size based on total workload activities, with strategies for implementing these guidelines.
