NSSLHA Celebrates 35 Years Overcoming the “Feh”-Factor Classifieds esults of the largest multi-institutional randomized clinical trial in swallowing were presented at the 2006 ASHA convention in November. Participating in the study were 126 institutions, including 47 acute care hospitals and 79 sub-acute facilities, in addition to patients living at home who had a consistent caregiver. The 10-year study randomized a total of 742 patients. The study comprised two sequential clinical trials, referred to as Part I and Part II. Part I included patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD), with or without dementia, and patients with dementia only. Speech-language pathologists referred patients to the study because they were suspected of aspirating thin liquids. The patients received six qualifying swallows of thin liquid barium— three 3-ml and three gulps from a cup—while examined video uorographically. Patients who aspirated on at least one of the six qualifying swallows were eligible to participate. After consent was obtained, those patients were given thin liquid swallows, using three randomized interventions to eliminate their aspiration: chin-down posture, See Clinical Trials page 32 First Person on the Last Page by Ella Inglebret, Desirae Bear Eagle, and CHiXapKaid (D. Storytelling has served as one of the primary means for passing on knowledge from one generation to the next in American Indian communities. Speech-language pathologists seeking tools to bridge home and school cultures for American Indian students will nd a rich intervention resource in the traditional stories of tribal nations. Implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP), as advocated by ASHA (Evidence-Based Practice in Communication Disorders [Position Statement], available at www.asha.org/members/ deskref-journals/deskref/default), has three deskref-journals/deskref/default components—use of the best available empirical evidence, consideration of client values, and clinical expertise. This project focused on the rst two components. The rst concern was whether scienti c evidence supports a storytelling-based early intervention program for children with hearing impairment. Indeed, research indicates that early speech and language intervention for children with hearing impairment was critical (Yoshinaga-Itano, 1998); that an auditory-oral approach contributed signi cantly to speech and language gains (Geers, 2002); and that use of storybooks with a focus on See Storytelling page 26 CICSD ASHA Member Nonmember/ Institution Nonmember/ Individual Domestic $30 $70 $50 Foreign $30 $80 $60 Published 17 times/year Nonmember/Institution US > > > $143 Foreign > > > $179 Nonmember/Individual US > > > $95 Foreign > > > $126 BACk ISSUES Attention nonmembers: When you subscribe to any current ASHA scholarly journal online, you receive the previous 2 years of online content free.
