ASHA 2009 Catalog - (Page 10) Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) WEB WORKSHOP CHARGE Syndrome: Developing Communication in Individuals With Multi-Sensory Deficits James W. Thelin, PhD, CCC-A Nancy K. Steele, MAEd Emily A. King, BA CHARGE syndrome has become the leading genetic cause of deaf-blindness in the United States. Though it is considered primarily a deaf-blind syndrome, every sensory modality may be involved, with associated medical problems. About half of those affected have severe-to-profound hearing loss; nearly all have vestibular anomalies; about half do not acquire symbolic language; many have neurologically based feeding problems; phenotypical behavior disorders are nearly universal. Children with CHARGE are often very difficult to evaluate, and special clinical skills are required. This presentation describes how SLPs and audiologists can play a major role in the development of communication in individuals with CHARGE syndrome. You will be able to— • describe the characteristic features and behaviors associated with CHARGE syndrome • identify the auditory and vestibular anomalies in CHARGE syndrome and describe their consequences • describe the communication disorders in CHARGE syndrome that can be assessed and treated by SLPs, educators, and deafblind specialists • utilize resources from the CHARGE Syndrome Foundation and from the National Consortium for Deaf-Blindness Introductory level Self-study web workshop 0.2 ASHA CEUs (2008–8/23/2011) Item #WEB0820 $60 ASHA member $75 nonmember AAC Assessment and Intervention for Aphasia: Clinical Tools Joanne P. Lasker, PhD, CCC-SLP Kathryn L. Garrett, PhD, CCC-SLP This program teaches participants how to use the AAC/aphasia classification system to describe communicators with aphasia. Presenters discuss an AAC/aphasia assessment protocol that includes the Multimodal Communication Screening Task for People with Aphasia and systematic AAC systems trials. Presenters instruct participants in implementing appropriate AAC strategies for partner-dependent, transitional, and independent communicators with aphasia. Additionally, participants learn how to devise appropriate treatment goals across the continuum of aphasia recovery incorporating AAC strategies. Discussion of AAC techniques range from partner-dependent conversational strategies to consideration of voice-output communication systems. WEB WORKSHOP You will be able to— • list three components of an AAC assessment protocol for people with aphasia • describe at least one AAC strategy for broad categories of communicators—partnerdependent, transitional, and independent • illustrate how AAC strategies can be incorporated into treatment goals • use appropriate clinical considerations when considering voice-output technology Intermediate level Self-study web workshop 0.3 ASHA CEUs (2008–6/27/2011) Item #WEB4501 $66 ASHA member $83 nonmember These programs are based on free web seminars developed by the AAC Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC). Register for the CEU test with ASHA, and access the free seminars at www.aac-rerc.com. You will receive a link to the CEU test by e-mail when your registration is complete. WEB WORKSHOP WEB WORKSHOP An Overview of the HealthBased Funding Programs That Cover Speech-Generating Devices (SGDs) Lew Golinker, Esq You will be able to— • describe the four areas that determine funding for SGDs • examine how SGDs can serve as specific treatment across five broad communication impairment areas • demonstrate how SLPs participate in the funding process for SGDs Intermediate level Self-study web workshop (test only) 0.1 ASHA CEUs (2007–12/31/2009) Item #WEB8000 $25 ASHA member $40 nonmember Maximizing the Literacy Skills of Individuals Who Use AAC Janice Light, PhD David B. McNaughton, PhD You will be able to— • describe essential components of literacy instruction for individuals who require AAC • describe the three steps included in direct, explicit instruction of basic skills • describe appropriate adaptations for individuals who require AAC in literacy instruction activities Intermediate level Self-study web workshop (test only) 0.1 ASHA CEUs (2008–9/30/2009) Item #WEB4505 $25 ASHA member $40 nonmember 10 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=AAC Assessment and Intervention for Aphasia%3a Clinical Tools&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat09 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=CHARGE Syndrome%3a Developing Communication in Individuals With Multi-Sensory Deficits&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat09 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=AAC Assessment and Intervention for Aphasia%3a Clinical Tools&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat09 http://www.aac-rerc.com http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=An Overview of the Health-Based Funding Programs That Cover Speech-Generating Devices (SGDs)&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat09 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=Maximizing the Literacy Skills of Individuals Who Use AAC&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat09 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=CHARGE Syndrome%3a Developing Communication in Individuals With Multi-Sensory Deficits&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat09 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=Maximizing the Literacy Skills of Individuals Who Use AAC&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat09 http://www.asha.org/eweb/OLSDynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=olsdetails&title=An Overview of the Health-Based Funding Programs That Cover Speech-Generating Devices (SGDs)&utm_source=asha&utm_medium=catalog&utm_campaign=MSDigCat09
