Kummer, PhD, CCC-SLP This presentation begins with a review of the anatomy of velopharyngeal structures and the physiology of velopharyngeal closure. Types and causes of velopharyngeal dysfunction and resonance disorders in children are discussed. The presenter describes and demonstrates simple “low-tech” and “no-tech” procedures that can be used for assessment in either a clinical or school setting. Various treatment options, including surgical intervention, prosthetic intervention, and speech therapy, are discussed. Finally, specific therapeutic techniques for this population are described and demonstrated. Given the controversial nature of these approaches, there is an urgent need for some degree of consensus regarding the applications and limitations of OMTs. This clinical forum summarizes historical and theoretical motivations for OMTs, documents current clinical trends, evaluates existing scientific support, and identifies future research needs.
