SLP/AUD WEB/ TELEPHONE SEMINAR A Workload Approach to Caseload in the Schools Trici Schraeder, MA Ellen Estomin, MA, CCC-SLP IDEA ‘97, medical advances, demographic shifts, and current knowledge of best practice have gradually expanded and complicated the role of speech-language pathologists in the schools. But large caseloads limit SLPs’ ability to embrace these expanded roles and responsibilities. Based on ASHA’s recently revised policy on workload and caseload size, this audio selfstudy presents a model for determining caseload size based on total workload activities, with strategies for implementing these guidelines. You will be able to— • identify a full range of roles and responsibilities for today’s school-based SLP • provide service and treatment outcomes related to caseload size • describe a model for establishing caseload size based on workload activities • list strategies for implementing a workload approach to caseload determination A Workload Approach to Caseload in the Schools Trici Schraeder Ellen Estomin School-Based Service Delivery The 3:1 Service Model Sharon Soliday, MS, CCC-SLP The 3:1 service model for school-based SLPs calls for three weeks of direct intervention followed by one week of indirect services. Developed to help SLPs better manage their workloads while enhancing services to students, the 3:1 model supports SLPs in implementing curriculum-based therapy and encourages interaction with teachers and parents about students’ needs. School districts using the model report increased job satisfaction and staff retention. This program describes how the model works, reviews data on its effectiveness, and offers practical steps toward implementation.
