J. Moore, MA, PhD, F. Med. Sci, FRS Regions of the cochlea where there are no functioning inner hair cells and/or neurons, known as dead regions, have important implications for the fitting of hearing aids. Basilar membrane vibration in such regions is not transduced and does not lead to action potentials in the auditory nerve. This audio self-study describes the audiogram configurations that may be associated with dead regions and describes the application of the TEN test, which can be used to detect dead regions and to define their extent. Clinical applications of the results, including applications in fitting hearing aids, are discussed. The focus is on self-perceived benefits of hearing aid use and how they can best be measured clinically. The study applied 20 different outcome measures and followed 134 participants for 1 year, 42 participants for 2 years, and 9 participants for 3 years.
