Campbell, PhD, CCC-A Learn to identify the primary ototoxic agents in common clinical use, including risk factors, patient considerations, primary clinical uses, and drug interactions. This program gives particular consideration to platinum-based chemotherapeutic agents, aminoglycoside antibiotics, and loop diuretics. Methods and alternatives for monitoring ototoxicity in both clinical and research populations are also discussed, along with a variety of testing options and patient considerations. Scheduling recommendations are reviewed for the various types of ototoxins, and the current research in otoprotective agents for drug- and noise-induced ototoxicity is surveyed. Some considerations of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), and the FDA approval process for drugs and nutraceuticals, are included. Bradley Schaefer, MD Rapid advances in genetic technology have tremendously increased understanding of the causes of hearing loss. The current evaluation of newborns identified as having an abnormal newborn hearing screen requires a highly specialized interdisciplinary team. Genetic testing is available for both syndromic and nonsyndromic hearing loss. The actual cause of the hearing loss can be identified in over 80% of the cases. This program reviews the epidemiology of hearing loss. It outlines the genetic evaluation and approach to diagnosis. The most common syndromic causes are reviewed, including associated medical issues.
