Audiology Highlights by John Ferarro ow more than ever, keeping ahead of the latest research, clinical applications, and knowledge is vital to the success of your career and profession. With ongoing economic challenges facing professionals in very real ways, the ASHA convention will give you the tools, techniques, and resources to come out ahead. The audiology program for ASHA 2009 includes special sessions highlighting the importance of “translational research” in audiology. That is, research that leads from bench to bedside, or in the case of audiology, bench to (sound) booth! These sessions feature presentations by leading scientists and clinicians on current research and how this new knowledge and technology are being applied in clinical populations. Many of the sessions are designed to attract an audience of both audiologists and speech-language pathologists. ASHA 2009 will bring together the two professions for a wealth of learning experiences. There will be more than 150 sessions and 70 posters for audiologists to choose from in New Orleans. The September/October issue of ASHA's Access Audiology will summarize all events for audiologists at ASHA Convention. You can access the most ASHA 2 0 0 9 Ear Tissue Engineering: Novel Approaches for Restoring Hearing.” • Honoring Judy Gravel: Pediatric Audiology. There will be two two-hour sessions focusing on Judy Gravel’s 30 years of contributions in pediatric audiology with panel presentations on the four early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) processes: administration, screening, diagnosis, and intervention. • Other topics. There will be several sessions on business management issues, cochlear implants, (central) auditory processing disorders, and hearing science. Audiologists who see school-aged children in their practice may be interested in a short course, “Crossing the Creek From the Clinic to the Classroom,” sponsored by Special Interest Division 9, Hearing and Hearing Disorders in Children. Short courses are ticketed three-hour programs; reserve your ticket when you register for the convention. • What is the Evidence? A Discussion of Hearing Instrument Technology. This presentation includes a panel of representatives from GNReSound Group, Siemans Hearing Instruments, Starkey Labs, Oticon, Phonak, and Widex. • NIH-sponsored Research Symposium on Neural Regneration and Communication Processes will take place on Saturday.
