ASHA 2 0 0 9 Ben Vereen from page 23 A 1992 motor vehicle accident on the Paci c Coast Highway left Vereen hospitalized with severe injuries that necessitated the use of a tracheostomy tube. “When you’re a singer and you have a trach, you have to nd a way back to speech,” Vereen said in an interview available at www.asha.org/podcast. “You wake up [after surgery], you realize that your vocal chords are exposed. And the rst thing the patient goes through is, ‘How can I live with this?’ or ‘I am not going to live with this.’” Doctors told Vereen that with hard work he could regain speech. “And then you meet you wonderful people [speech-language pathologists] who are in the eld and working with people who have been in this place, as I was. I want to thank you, those of you … who work in this profession, for your patience and your loving care.” Since his recuperation, Vereen not only has returned to his acting career, he also provides motivational and inspirational speeches based on his view of life. “You know,” he said, “a wonderful thing happened today. I woke up. And whatever I have coming at me during that day is nothing compared to the miracle that just happened. Because with that miracle I can change all of the things that I am seemingly up against. And we’re up against a lot in life. And I have a choice. I can choose to progress or I can choose to regress. So I choose the higher ground. And I think that’s what we all do.” The opening session, scheduled for Nov. 19 from 6 to 7 p.m., will include remarks from Alex Johnson and John Ferraro, convention program co-chairs, and ASHA President Sue Hale. Vereen welcomes the opportunity to visit New Orleans for the ASHA convention. He has “many wonderful memories” of New Orleans, and helped to organize theater community fundraisers after Hurricane Katrina. “We just want New Orleans to know that you’re not forgotten and you’re in our prayers,” he said. “For me, I’m out there banging the banner for New Orleans until we’re all healed up. So I want to thank you for bringing me in and letting me be a part of that wonderful cultural environment.” Convention Housing Update SHA has worked with hotels in New Orleans to obtain the best possible rates for convention attendees.
