ASHA 2 0 0 9 Going "Green" in New Orleans • also uses “carbon offsets,” which support renewable energy and related projects around the world. TMS will offset every gallon of diesel burned at ASHA 2009. Greener signs and carpets. The large signs at the convention will have no laminates or glues, reducing non-recyclable plastics and energy consumption by 33%. The carpet in the exhibit hall has recycled content. Energy-ef cient of ce equipment and lighting. Energy Star-approved of ce equipment and lighting will reduce energy consumption signi cantly. Online exhibitor kits will be standard this year, with kits also available on CD-ROM, saving more than 200 pages of paper. Waste recycling. ASHA will use the Convention Center’s recycling program to sort and recycle a variety of non-food waste materials. • Use recycling bins. Bins for bottles and cans are located in the Convention Center. • Minimize hotel laundry. Accept the popular option of skipping a day for a change of sheets—just inform the hotel that you want the bed made, and fresh towels if you need them, but not new sheets. And remember to turn out the lights out when you go out to sessions all day! • Bring a water bottle with you. Buying bottled water contributes signi cant waste to land lls. Also, you don’t have to wait in line and spend money on water! • Think ahead about transportation. Sharing cab rides, for example, is not only cheaper but also easier on the air we breathe. • Offset your carbon footprint. Many people are choosing to “offset” their carbon footprint from an airplane trip or car to the convention by purchasing “carbon offsets,” which are donations to organizations that plant trees or run renewable energy or energy-ef ciency projects. Two organizations that you can access online through Google are Carbonfund and TerraPass. s you prepare to travel to New Orleans in November, ASHA is working hard to lighten the environmental load of our large convention. With thousands of members gathering in The Big Easy, we can make a signi cant impact—and a positive one—as an organization and as individuals. ASHA’s efforts this year include the following: • Online handouts. The convention will be as paperless as possible. Presenters have been instructed to upload their handouts to ASHA’s Web site and develop a one-page note-taking outline that can be downloaded before or after the convention. Shortcourse attendees will receive handouts on a CD. • Fuel-ef cient shuttle buses. ASHA chose TMS as the vendor for transportation in part because of its commitment to emissions reduction. Many of its luxury buses are tted with diesel engines and run on ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel. In addition, in 2009 TMS is planting one blue spruce tree for every 20 bus days contracted—each blue spruce can convert about 600 pounds of pollution into oxygen.
