The ASHA Leader - August 11, 2009 - (Page 58)

Flood from page 57 than 50 students arrived at her house with trucks, muscles, and the willingness to help her. They even returned the following night—and brought their friends. “I was stunned,” said Gerard. “I tried doing it myself on Monday. On Tuesday some of my yoga friends came over, but Wednesday, wow! All these students showed up and I didn’t even know all of them! They just were there to help.” And the help paid off. Altogether the volunteer crew put up 10,000 sandbags and, as the Souris crested on April 14 and Gerard’s yard and nowevacuated barn began to fill with water, the sandbags held. The water made it up only one foot against the sandbags in the back of her house and only six inches in the front. Today the yard and barn are dried out, the horses have returned, and the cleanup is nearly over. Gerard’s life has pretty much gone back to normal, but she is still awed by the selfless help provided by her students and colleagues. “I have never felt more loved or more blessed. I know it sounds hokey, but I couldn’t believe people I didn’t know were helping me,” Gerard said. “This is my wake-up call—you always help other people. [North Dakota] maybe doesn’t have mountains, but it has monumental people.” Kellie Rowden-Racette, print and online editor for The ASHA Leader, can be reached at krowden-racette@ asha.org. Students Win Ethics Essay Contest T hree graduate-level students have received awards for their essays on professional relationships in ASHA’s 2009 Student Ethics Essay Award (SEEA) program. SEEA is designed to create greater awareness of situations that could pose ethical dilemmas for individuals in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) and to offer options for addressing these dilemmas. The contest encourages CSD students to think about ethical decision-making as they prepare for careers in audiology, speech-language pathology, or speech, language, and hearing sciences. Participants submitted essays on the meaning and importance of Principle IV of ASHA’s Code of Ethics: “Individuals shall honor their responsibilities to the professions and their relationships with colleagues, students, and members of allied professions. Individuals shall uphold the dignity and autonomy of the professions, maintain harmonious interprofessional and intraprofessional relationships, and accept the professions’ self-imposed standards.” The following students received the 2009 SEEA: • First Place: Megan Thurber, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind.—“The Importance of Collaboration and Character: Principle of Ethics IV.” (National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) chapter advisor: Emily E. Tyson) • Second Place: Jennifer Wallace Knapp, Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, N.C.—“Principle IV” (NSSLHA chapter advisor: Kimberly Crawford) • Third Place: Victoria Hatzelis, Teachers College, Columbia University, New York—“Overcoming Professional Challenges in the Field of Speech-Language Pathology: A Lifelong Commitment” (NSSLHA chapter advisor: Elise M. Wagner) To read the winning essays, go to www.asha.org/practice/ethics/ethics_ essay_recip.htm. Watch for the announcement of the 2010 SEEA competition later this year.
