Basic First Aid for the Community and Workplace - (Page 13) Major Wounds First Aid • Assess, Alert, and Attend to the ABCs. • Control bleeding. • Care for shock. • Amputated body parts can often be reattached. If possible, get the severed part back and give it to EMS providers. • Cooling the amputated (or severed) body part will keep tissue alive much longer. This training guide is provided online for individual use only. Reprinting for classroom distribution is prohibited. – Wrap the severed part in a sterile or clean cloth. – Place it in a tightly sealed plastic bag or waterproof container. – Place the bag or container on ice. Tissue wound. – Do not sink the part in water, and do not put it directly on ice. – Chill, but do not freeze it. A wound is a break in the skin. Wounds can range from a tiny splinter to a complete amputation. All wounds need first aid. Serious wounds require medical attention. A wound may be sign of serious injury to deeper tissues and organs. The role of the first aid provider is to control bleeding, reduce pain, and prevent infection. Impaled Object An object embedded into tissue. Signs and Symptoms • Bleeding. • Pain. • Progressing shock. First Aid • Assess, Alert, and Attend to the ABCs. • Control the bleeding by applying pressure around the object. • Place bulky dressings around the object for support. • Do not remove the object unless it is through the cheek and blocks breathing. Amputation or Avulsion Open Chest Wound An injury to the chest can disrupt the mechanical ability to draw air, containing oxygen, into the lungs. Immediate recognition and treatment is critical. Signs and Symptoms • Bleeding. • Pain. • Progressing shock. Amputation Amputation is loss of a body part. Avulsion means that some tissue remains connected.
