Basic First Aid for the Community and Workplace - (Page 32) • Weakness, nausea, dizziness. • Heavy sweating. • Fear of impending doom (feeling like something extremely bad is going to happen but not sure what.) • Denial — The victim often refuses to accept or believe he or she may be having a heart attack. This can delay treatment and increase risk of death. First Aid This training guide is provided online for individual use only. Reprinting for classroom distribution is prohibited. Compression Only CPR • Assess, Alert, and Attend the ABCs. • Have the victim sit down and rest quietly. • Loosen any tight clothing. • If the victim has a known heart condition, help them take their medication. Usually, this is nitroglycerin, placed or sprayed under the tongue. • If chest discomfort/pain is unimproved or worsens five minutes after one dose has been taken, call 9-1-1 immediately.44 • If it’s available and you are properly trained, give emergency oxygen. • Comfort, calm, and reassure the victim until EMS arrives. • If the victim becomes unresponsive and is not breathing normally, start CPR. Chest compressions. If an adult or child suddenly collapses and is unresponsive and not breathing normally and you are not trained in CPR or you are reluctant to do rescue breathing, you can still provide lifesaving first aid. • Get the victim onto his back on the ground. • Place one hand on top of the other, and place the heel of your bottom hand on the center of the victim’s chest between the nipples. • Lock your elbows and begin forceful chest compressions at a rate of about 100 per minute. • Push hard, fast and deep until help arrives or until you are too worn out to continue. • Take turns if you have a partner.45,46 If you are not currently trained in CPR, consider doing so. Aspirin Therapy • If the victim does not have a history of aspirin allergy, the 9-1-1 operator may recommend the victim chew an aspirin while awaiting arrival of EMS providers. • If an aspirin is recommended, help the victim take it. Usual dose is a half or whole adult aspirin tablet (162 to 325 mg.) chewed and swallowed. 32 Basic First Aid for the Community and Workplace Sudden Illness
