TRAINING
Dedicated Mentoring: An ASH Tradition

t present, hematologists
have an unprecedented opportunity
to translate sci-
ence into medicine. This is quite
different from when the great physician-writer
Lewis Thomas described
his internship at Boston City
Hospital in pre-penicillin 1937. He
said, “Whether you survived or
not depended on the natural history
of the disease itself. Medicine
made little or no difference.” Since
then, biomedical research has led to
previously unfathomable advances
such as mapping of the human genome,
the use of nuclear and molecular
imaging, and insights into cancer
stem cells. Molecular techniques
are now available to characterize
pathologic processes and identify
therapeutic targets. We have seen
imatinib emerge as the quintessential
targeted therapy with many
other drugs also being rationally
developed. The potential has never
been greater for finding more effective
treatments and even cures. Because
of this, biomedical discovery

progress requires personnel, and
escalating costs and downturns in
financial support threaten to shrink
the pool of promising new investigators.
Therefore, it has never been
more critical to share enthusiasm
and provide trainees with mentorship
and direction.
At the 2011 ASH Trainee Day,
several experts shared their experiences
and insights into what is
