ASHRAE Insights - April 2009 - (Page 6) 6 Region, Chapter, Member News Wilkins Receives Service Award Chris Wilkins, Member ASHRAE, recently received the Service to ASHRAE Award, given by the Research Administration Committee for recognition of excellence in volunteer service in the area of Society research. Wilkins was honored for his contributions to the research program, particularly serving as TC 4.1, Load Calculation Data and Procedures, research subcommittee chair for multiple terms since becoming active with the committee in 1992. More than $1 million worth of research ASHRAE Insights April 2009 Region-at-Large Promotes Membership LISBON, Portugal—Adding 600 new members and advancing 100 existing members were two of the goals discussed in a Membership Promotion Workshop held as part of the Region-at-Large’s Chapter Regional Conference. Richie Mittal, regional vice chair of Membership Promotion, led the group in a discussion about major issues facing the Society, their goals and what excites them about serving as chairs of the chapter Membership Promotion committees. Member Promotes ASHRAE Worldwide By Filza H. Walters, Detroit Chapter past president DETROIT— James L. Newman, a member of the Detroit Chapter, is spreading the work of ASHRAE as part of his passion for sustainability and system optimization to conserve energy. While recently in Dubai and Doha, Qatar, Newman led training workshops on LEED and ASHRAE standards for teams of architects, engineers and owners. He had worked with many of the individuals in the audience for over a year, but he was meeting most of them for the first time. “They don’t know much about ASHRAE standards over there, even though they’re supposed to be using them on LEED projects, so I spent a day doing 90.1 training,” said Newman. While in Qatar, he met with ASHRAE chapter members, off icers and their guests. “They’re truly a bunch of gung- Santosh Devassy (L), a member of the ASHRAE Falcon Chapter, and James Newman stand together at Madinat Jumeirah Resort. ho people for ASHRAE!” he remarked. “They had all their officers at the training.” While in the Middle East, Newman visited several shopping centers, the Emirates Towers, Madinat Jumeirah, learned about the history of the Burj-al-Arab, the only seven-star hotel in the world, and studied the refrigeration system used for the snow hill in the Mall of the Emirates. Atlanta Chapter Night at the Museum ATLANTA—History was the theme of the Atlanta Chapter’s December meeting held at the Atlanta History Center. Chapter members enjoyed exhibits featuring original Saturday Evening Post cover tear sheets by Norman Rockwell and Jim Henson’s original Muppets. The chapter also celebrated its own history with 14 past presidents in attendance, including William Applegarth who was president in 1954. Werkema Lectures At Falcon Chapter Meeting DUBAI, United Arab Emirates—The Emirates Falcon Chapter hosted Distinguished Lecturer Tom Werkema at its November meeting. Some 200 people attended to hear Werkema’s presentation on climate change science, politics and ozone issues. Hightower Technical Achievement Award,. The Hightower Award is given by the technical Activities Committee in recognition of excellence in volunteer service in the area of technical committee, technical group, and Technical research group activities excluding research and standards. He was honored for his participation in the restructuring of the ASHRAE Handbook—Applications chapter on enclosed vehicular facilities. Hawaii Chapter Dedicates Wall of Fame HONOLULU—As part of its 40th anniversary celebration, the Hawaii Chapter established a Wall of Fame dedicated in memory of deceased past presidents “who unselfishly contributed their time and effort for the advancement of arts and sciences with HVAC&R technology to provide us a much more comfortable world to live in.” Special attendees at the meeting were past chapter presidents.
