Ashrae Journal - October 2008 - (Page 5) C O M M E N TA RY Staying on Task “We have undertaken the responsibility of speaking with authority, of finding the truth and proclaiming it, and a critical world will hold us to our task or find us unworthy.” Things that set ASHRAE apart include its large, active volunteer base. But its most notable distinction is its commitment to science. It’s been that this way from the beginning, when John Starr, first president of the American Society of Refrigerating Engineers (ASRE), addressed charter members in 1904. The science-based approach and resolve to do good are why the work of ASHRAE, Fred Turner ASRE’s successor, is as relevant and important today as in 1904. This work is showcased in several ways in this issue. One is the opening of ASHRAE’s new headquarters, which has been renovated to provide an example of sustainability and a laboratory so members can learn about the new technologies and assess their value. The article, “ASHRAE’s Living Lab,” describes the system architecture, data access and capabilities of the headquarters building. The lab, say the authors, will allow ASHRAE members to evaluate the ongoing energy and operation performance of the building at a level that is unprecedented in current commercial buildings. ASHRAE RESEARCH is the heart of the Society’s mission and forms the scientific foundation for much of what ASHRAE does. The 2007-08 ASHRAE Research Report in this issue describes the 55 ongoing projects, which have a dollar value of $7.2 million. During the 2007-08 fiscal year, ASHRAE initiated 30 projects and completed 14. The average cost of new projects was approximately $120,000. Ten technical papers based on research projects were presented at Society meetings during the past year. Of special interest is a new project (1456-RP) that is intended to assess and implement natural and hybrid ventilation models in energy simulations. The project is being co-funded by the Chartered Institute of Building Science Engineers (CIBSE) and Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology Institute (ARTI). TWO ARTICLES in this issue cover ASHRAE standards. One is the new ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170-2008, Ventilation of Health Care Facilities. It is intended that this standard will replace the appendix on health care ventilation in ASHRAE Standard 62.1. The other article covers the future of ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except LowRise Residential Buildings. This standard is the predominant energy standard in the U.S. and is a part of almost every building code. It is often the benchmark by which buildings are compared and rated. Other articles in this issue cover how the art of pipe sizing is becoming a science; a different approach to cooling data centers; and the 100th anniversary of the Grosvenor Humidity Chart. Hopefully, what we do adds value to ASHRAE and its work. ASHRAE Journal is the successor publication to ASRE’s Refrigerating Engineering and the ASHE Journal.
