Andrea Koncz, NACE employment information manager, says NACE’s spring 2008 survey of employers showed that 8% of its member companies expected to hire more graduates in 2009 than 2008. This number dropped to 6.1% in August and to 1.3% in October. Mechanical engineering, she says, is not showing a decline at this time. These are the second-most sought-after grads by employers for 2009. Accounting is first. The NACE surveys, she says, show that 126 reporting employers (54% of the total) say they plan to hire more mechanical engineers in 2009. This percentage is unchanged from the previous year. “Technical degrees,” she says, “are typically more in demand than non-technical degrees.” Top 10 Degrees in Demand (Bachelor’s) Major Accounting Mechanical Engineering Electrical Engineering Computer Science Business Administration Economics/Finance Information Sciences Computer Engineering Management Information Marketing Number of Respondents Who Will Hire 130 126 121 109 105 103 91 80 80 79 Percent of Total Respondents Who Will Hire 56.3% 54.5% 52.4% 47.2% 45.5% 44.6% 39.4% 34.6% 34.6% 34.2% Source: National Association of Colleges and Employers Ms. Koncz says the decreased demand for grads comes after five straight years of double-digit growth. She thinks the job market is going to get tighter and employers are going to get even more selective. “This report shows that the skills employers want in new grads isn’t changing,” she says. “If anything, they (employers) have fewer positions, and they’re being a little more selective.” “Job Outlook 2009” is available at www.naceweb.org.
