ASHRAE Journal - January 2009 - (Page 5) C O M M E N TA RY The Show Goes On I suspect that most people know that the Chicago editions of AHR Expo are the biggest and best attended. The 2006 Show in Ch icago se t re cords for attend ance, e xhibitors and exhibit space. This year’s Show will be almost as large despite the challenging economy. I suspect that fewer know of Chicago’s long history with the Show. Here are a few anecdotes: • This will be the 18th Show in Chicago. The .rst was held in 1936, six years after the Show was founded in 1930. For many years, the Show rotated between Chicago and an Eastern U.S. city. The Show is now held in Chicago every third year. • The 1936 Show featured 298 exhibitors, Fred Turner and every Show in Chicago has been bigger than the previous Chicago Show. • Of the 1,800-plus exhibitors this year, 192 have exhibited in more than 30 Shows, 47 have exhibited in more than 50 Shows and eight have exhibited in all 61 Shows. THIS EDITION features ASHRAE Journal’s Official Product and Show Guide. It was prepared for distribution on the Show floor, but it’s also a handy reference for the year. Included are more than 300 product descriptions, more than 200 ads and online access to further information. A spe cial pa rt of t he Show Gu ide is t he AHR Expo Innovation Awards. T his c ompetition is spon sored by ASHRAE, the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) and International Exposition Company to encourage and recognize innovation. What makes the co mpetition s pecial is that pr oducts are judged by ASHRAE members who also are experienced practitioners. These judges reviewed 107 products to determine winners in nine categories. Twenty-seven other products were awarded honorable mention. The 2009 Product of the Year will be announced during ceremonies at AHR Expo. Take a look at the winners on Pages S12-S25. It’s impressive to see how the industry is responding to issues such as energy efficiency, installation, maintenance and sustainability. The Show Guid e also includes welcome messages from ASHRAE and AHRI, the Show sponsors, and an exhibitor list and floor plan to help attendees navigate the 11 acres (4.5 ha) of exhibits. In addition to the Show Guide, this issue also includes the full complement of technical features, standing columns and industry news. A special element is more than six pages of letters that were generated by a column in November by Joe Lstiburek, Ph.D., P.E., Fellow ASHRAE. IF YOU haven’t attended a recent Show, you should. Much has changed. More than 350 of the exhibitors in Chicago will be international, reflecting the growing global nature of HVAC&R. In all, 30 countries will be represented. Attendees are expected to represent more than 110 countries. You’ll also find more than 100 educational programs and technical demonstrations. In addition, ASHRAE will be offering 40 courses, seminars and sessions at McCormick Place. s More importantly, you’ll get a chance to see what’ new in the industry, meet with equipment providers and participate in what has become the world’s largest HVAC&R event.
