ASHRAE Journal - January 2009 - (Page S18) Innovation A wards signed for installation in residential and commercial locations quickly and without ductwork. They are energy efficient, featuring an HSPF rating of 12 and a SEER of 25. NITE/Masterflux Compressors from Tecumseh Products—Masterflux Group (Booth 5310) were developed to maintain a comfortable temperature within the sleeper of an over-theroad vehicle while the truck’s engine is not running. For each hour, the NITE system is in use, it saves 1 to 1.5 gallons of fuel with zero emissions. It is efficient enough to run the full night on a battery package. Grundfos® Pumps’ (Booth 5317) PACO® VSM/ VSMS Pumps’ design with double volutes incorporates two cut-waters located at 180° and divides the flow into two equal and opposed hydraulic forces so that pump operation is stable throughout the performance curve. This design allows for a small footprint, greater efficiency, simplified piping, easier service and prolonged life. Green Building EnOcean®’s (Booth 3650) Hotel Room Retro-fit Kit provides hotel owners with an unobtrusive means of retrofitting rooms with controls that “de-energize” unoccupied rooms. When hotel guests are outside the room, energy-hungry devices such as the lights, television, heater and air conditioner are disabled. The device is a peeland-stick key card switch that can be installed by nonprofessionals, does not require exposed wires and allows the hotel to remain open during installation. The Muller 3C from Muller Industries Australia (Booth 5885) is an alternative to existing heat rejection systems. It allows for safe, hygienic operation by removing the requirement for expensive chemical treatment and the risk of Legionnaires’ Disease. It consumes up to 80% less water than traditional water-cooled systems. Wireless Battery-less Sensing and DDC Controllers from Distech Controls™ (Booth 3436) are p owe r e d by a m b i e n t e n e rg y, eliminating the need for batteries and making the devices virtually service-free. This device is wireless, so there is no need for copper and plastic wiring, which makes it easy to install and relocate. Heating The Grundfos MAGNA circulator pump from Grundfos® Pumps (Booth 5317) is a speed-controlled pump for circulating water for heating. Built-in intelligence allows MAGNA to analyze current conditions and adjust its performance accordingly. Because it does not use seals or oils, it has no risk of potential leaks. S18 WILO USA’s (Booth 2847) Stratos ECO is a residential circulator used in hot water heating, domestic hot water, and solar and geothermal systems. It uses ECM technology to automatically adjust flow based on system requirements without external sensors, saving electrical power and maximizing system efficiency. Its design also allows for simplified installation and a lower number of models required. The Temp A Trim from Webster Engineering & Manufacturing (Booth 4168) allows for increased commercial industrial burner efficiency by monitoring combustion air temperature and modifying the speed of the blower motor accordingly. The Temp A Trim is a low-cost, less complicated burner monitoring device. The Elite Plus Heating Boiler from Heat Transfer Products Inc. (Booth 6568) is gas adaptive. It automatically senses the caloric content of the fuel supplied and adjusts automatically to maintain perfect combustion. Its adaptive technology makes installation of high-efficiency boilers much easier and more tolerant of inconsistent gas quality. IAQ The Oasis® EPX indirect evaporative cooler from Munters (Booth 5222) provides an alternative to conventional HVAC in dry climates. It uses engineered elliptical polymer tubes that flex to help minimize buildup. Internal and external surface enhancements allow Oasis to achieve indirect evaporative cooling efficiencies of up to 80%. It also achieves winter heat recovery, with water sprays off, of 50%. The Vital Air DryMAX minisplit dehumidifier from Vital Technologies (Booth 1452) controls humidity and temperature where moisture loads are high and/or where space conditions are critical. T h e system prioritizes dehumidification, removing moisture in cooling, heating and neutral air modes. Minimal footprint and installation costs allow for proper dehumidification even in challenging spaces. When installed inside HVAC systems, the YORK® Affinity™ UVC Germicidal Light from the Unitary Products Division of Johnson Controls (Booth 4749) eliminates foul odors caused by mold and fungus that grow in wet evaporator sections. Its UVC light is able to provide maximum dosage of UVC energy at 45°F to 55°F (7.2°C to 12°C) in a rapidly moving airstream, maintaining the optimal plasma temperature inside the bulb. Refrigeration The Fresh-Aire ICE-UV from Triatomic Environmental (Booth 6446) is designed for installation in ice machines to January 2009
