electrical and signal system distribution to the back of the labs, allowing a central point for ease of maintenance. Due to the low humidity and wet-bulb temperatures experienced in Jefferson County, Colo., the NREL S&TF project takes advantage of indirect and direct evaporative cooling throughout most of the year. This strategy allows the HVAC system to meet the building cooling load without operation of the chillers for a large portion of the year. The project submitted for 54 potential credits, in addition to all of the system’s prerequisites and achieved all 54, earning a Platinum rating. NREL S&TF is the first federal lab facility to earn this rating. Beyond the on-site energy savings listed earlier, Green-e certified Tradable Renewable Certificates equal to 50% of the project’s energy consumption were purchased, highlighting NREL’s commitment to sustainability. All HVAC systems use non-CHFC-based R-134a to reduce the global warming potential. Storm water is collected on site to provide irrigation to all native landscaping, eliminating the need for potable water irrigation systems. All plumbing fixtures in the facility are lowwater usage, leading to an estimated 21,000 gallon (79 493 L) (25.47%) savings. During construction, the general contractor reported 80% (based on weight) of total waste diverted from landfill deposit, and 11% (based on cost) of all materials in the building contain post-consumer recycled content. Site lighting has been designed in accordance with the IESNA best practices to reduce light pollution.
