A summary of recently completed research projects and instructions for obtaining results from those projects are provided as a regular feature of ASHRAE Insights and the “Research” page of the ASHRAE Web site. Grants-in-Aid ASHRAE grants-in-aid provide up to $10,000 each for graduate students to conduct research in fields of interest to ASHRAE. In 2008-2009, 18 graduate student grants-in-aid were awarded. These went to: Craig Bradshaw,-Purdue University, Brian Coffey,University California Berkeley, Matthew Elliott,-Texas A&M University, Wei Feng-Syracuse University, Elliott Gail-University of Texas-Austin, Kate Goldstein-University of Texas-Austin, Priscilla Guerrero-University of Texas-Austin, Neil HayesWashington State University, James Lo-University of TexasAustin, Danielle Monfet-Concordia University, Mohammad Nejad-Pennsylvania State University, William O’Brien-Concordia University, Selen Okcu-Georgia Institute of Technology, Thomas Thorsell-Syracuse University, Cassandra Wiese-University of Nevada, Zhao Xinzhi-University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Wagda Zuo-Purdue University. The highest-rated recipients Angela Lewis-Pennsylvania State University, and James McNeillUniversity of Colorado-Boulder, hold the added distinction of being named the Life Members’ Club GIA recipients, and their grants are funded by financial contributions from club members. The latest grants brought the total to $3,365,550 awarded to 515 students during the 42 years the program has been in effect. Recipients have represented over 80 different colleges and universities. Graduate grants-in-aid solicitations are mailed each September to appropriate universities. Faculty advisors send applications for graduate student grants-in-aid to the Manager of Research & Technical Services, ASHRAE, 1791 Tullie Circle, NE, Atlanta, GA 30329 by December 15 of each year. The application should provide: (1) the student’s history: name, qualifications, and a copy of his/her transcript; (2) description of the proposed research project; (3) Information on Institution and Faculty Advisor Research Expenditures The Board of Directors has approved $2,925,000 for research projects and grants-in-aid for fiscal year 2009-2010. Competing for new project funds are seven tentative research projects, two unsolicited research proposals, and many other project topics in various stages of development. Active projects are summarized in this report. The summaries include: the title of the project, the start date, the end date or projected (P) end date, the names of the contractor and principal investigator, the sponsoring Technical Committee or Task Group monitoring the research, earmarked co-funding, a listing of research strategic plan goals supported by this project, and a brief description of the project.
