HAiNES, PRESidENtiAL MEMBER/FELLOw ASHRAE REPRiNtEd FROM ASHRAE JOURNAL, JUNE 1960 But there are other benefits with an air-recovery system, the client gets increased cleanliness, reducing cleaning and decorating expenses, improved production with fewer rejects (as in the case of the food-processing plant or a precision-manufacturing facility). Depending on the individual situation, these advantages may far outweigh a strictly economic analysis based on original and operating costs. It is important that the electronic air cleaner and the charcoal filter be considered as a unit. Without the electronic air cleaner, which removes 90 percent or more of particulate matter 0.01 micron diam and larger, the tiny passages of the charcoal filter would become choked with dirt, rendering it useless. Without the activated-charcoal filter, the air-recovery system would remove dirt all right, but it would not remove odor molecules. Therefore additional outside air would have to be brought in to dilute odors, and this would obviate any potential economic advantage of the system. Mechanics of an air-recovery system (Fig.1 and Fig. 1A) are simple. Air, at velocities to 500 fpm, first passes through a 13,000 volt electrostatic field putting a positive electrical December 2009 conomically speaking, there are two arguments to justify the adoption of a new engineering concept: it either offers the same service for less cost, or it offers greater advantages for the same cost. The economic justification for an air-recovery system rests on the latter. (For the purposes of this paper, an air-recovery system is defined as a high-efficiency electronic air cleaner teamed with an activated-charcoal air filter.) The original cost of such a system is comparable to a conventional air-conditioning system, for the air-recovery system requires less air-conditioning equipment, because it cleans and deodorizes air that already has been heated or cooled instead of bringing in large quantities of outside air which would have to be raised or lowered to the desired temperature. Operating costs are approximately equal with the advantage lying with the air-recovery system. John E. hainEs, PrEsidEntial MEMbEr/FEllow ashraE John E. Haines, Presidential Member/Fellow ASHRAE, graduated from Purdue University in 1925 with a degree in chemical engineering. Mr. Haines joined Honeywell’s commercial division in New york as a sales engineer in 1929, and became assistant manager of that division in 1934. Named manager of Honeywell’s Chicago factory in 1937, Mr. Haines was made head of the division in Minneapolis in 1940. in 1945, he was elected a corporate vice president. Active in professional engineering societies for many years, he was elected president of ASHAE in 1955, and in 1961 was named Fellow in recognition of his services to the air-conditioning industry. in 1953, Mr. Haines published the first book of its kind on automatic controls. He also authored many articles on air conditioning for various engineering publications. Haines died in November 1967 at the age of 64. According to a past ASHRAE president, Haines “…was an amazing combination of engineer, salesman and author… (and) probably did more to sell the idea of air conditioning to the public than anybody since willis Carrier.” 52 ASHRAE Journal a s h r a e. o rg
