The total pressure required to operate the path containing Sections A and B is 0.36 + 0.38 = 0.74 in. wg (106 + 117 = 223 Pa). The total pressure required to operate the path that contains Sections A and C is 0.36 + 0.39 – 0.75 in. wg (106 + 140 = 246 Pa). Because both paths require virtually the same amount of pressure, the system is in balance without any additional dampering (or minimal dampering in the metric design). Although this is a well-balanced design, it is not necessarily an optimum design. The designer should ideally change the first section’s size, redesign the system, calculate the operating cost and ultimately select a design that gives the lowest total owning cost. It would be impossible to do real systems in this manner without using a computer. Total Pressure Analysis Once any system is sized, it should be analyzed using total pressure to determine if smaller sizes or less expensive fittings can be used in non-critical paths to reduce costs and further balance the system. To do this, after designing the system, determine the critical paths, Then determine the excess pressures in the other paths. The sizes in the paths with excess pressure are systematically reduced to use up the excess pressure. After utilizing all available sizes, if there is still excess pressure available, begin to use less efficient fittings. This type of analysis is most suited to the static regain design because it will already be fairly well balanced. However, differences in available sizes or in pressures required at terminals will usually cause even a static regain method to not be perfectly balanced (as was the case with the metric design). In the sample problem, we used 16 in. (400 mm) and 13 in. (315 mm) diameters. If the 13 in. size was not available, we would have to choose either the 14 in. or the 12 in. size. Choosing the 12 in. size would have increased the pressure loss in Section C to 0.58 in. wg. This would have increased the total pressure required to operate the path containing Sections A and C to 0.94 in. wg. Besides increasing the cost to operate the fan, this would require us to add some type of dampering device in Section B to add 0.20 in. wg to keep the system in balance.
