than 900 lumen output, less than 10 W power input, luminous efficacy of greater than 90 lm/W, lifetime greater than 25,000 hours, and color quality, light distribution, and form factor similar to traditional 60W incandescent bulbs12), they will likely be incentivized by utilities and local and federal government agencies. The theoretical annual savings from complete adoption of these bulbs would be roughly 34 TWh, an 83% reduction for this type of lighting. Additional Applications There are a number of other applications for which LEDs are well suited. Some are becoming well established, such as in building exit signage and traffic lights, currently saving roughly 2.8 and 4.6 TWh per year, respectively. Other technologies are just beginning to gain wider acceptance, such as solid-state lighting of refrigerated display cases, where their increased efficacy and output at lower temperatures, reduced waste heat, and long life are significant benefits. In other short-range lighting applications, such as retail jewelry cases or residential kitchen undercabinet lighting, LEDs provide low-profile installations and dimming capabilities with reduced energy usage and a lower surface temperature, reducing the chance of skin burns compared to halogen alternatives. Matthew Wiggins, Ph.D.; Kurtis McKenney and John Dieckmann are employees of TIAX LLC, Cambridge, Mass.; James Brodrick,Ph.D. is a project manager with the Building Technologies Program, U.S. Department of Energy, Washington, D.C. Proper use of LEDs can result in increased energy efficiency, reduced maintenance, and increased tolerance of challenging environmental or operational conditions compared to other lamp technologies. While LED lamps are not yet appropriate for all applications, robust, cost-effective LED lighting is now available for several important lighting applications, with others being developed. Consumers should be cautious with currently available LED products, and should note the importance of proper thermal and electrical design of the luminaire. Manufacturers’ claims are often overstated, and third party testing, such as that of the Lighting Facts or the CALiPER programs,9 is important for assessing actual luminaire and bulb properties and providing reliable information to consumers. As costs continue to decrease and LED technology continues to achieve higher efficacies, it will become more advantageous to use LEDs in additional applications. References 1. Staying current with the latest facility operational strategies and technologies can reduce energy use in buildings by 10% to 40%. ASHRAE’s Operations & Performance Management Professional (OPMP) certification assesses a candidate’s understanding of how to design and execute an effective building operations and maintenance plan based on optimizing HVAC system performance. The certification was developed in collaboration with APPA and the GSA. Show building owners that you have the solutions to provide strategies and tools to handle complex HVAC challenges—so buildings stay green not gray. Visit www.ashrae.org/opmp to learn more. Membership in ASHRAE is not a requirement for certification. BE ASHRAE CERTIFIED www.info.hotims.com/27538-106 ASHRAE Journal
