I am not sure a letter to the editor is the proper place to express my view that ASHRAE has lost its bearing, but I am unaware of any other venue to express this concern. As engineers and scientists, we should understand that language and definitions matter. ASHRAE has lost sight of basic principles of physics and engineering and has veered into the political realm where the def inition of “is” can be debated. ASHRAE is now headed down the road of encouraging the public to believe there is such thing as a zero energy building. I understand that ASHRAE has tried to narrowly define what it calls a “net zero energy building” and contends that the definition of same is a building that generates as much energy on-site to put back into the electrical grid on an annual basis as it draws from the grid. And, by the way, said local (on-site generated) energy must be “renewable,” currently interpreted as generated using wind, solar, or geothermal “nondepletable” energy sources. But, even ASHRAE spokespersons and writers have morphed the term into “zero energy buildings.” This is abominable for an engineering society. An example is in Gordon Holness’ Presidential Address in the August 2009 issue. He writes, “We have the potential to change how our existing buildings use energy to the point of zero-energy buildings in the coming decades.” Counting the energy required to manufacture products and transport them to a building site, plus the energy to put those products in place, there is no such thing as a zero energy (or zero-energy, or Zero Energy) building. If the building is artificially lighted, heated, and cooled to any degree, it similarly cannot be operated with zero energy. The source of the energy can be different. The impact the energy source has on the environment and the end users can also be different. However, the law of entropy, which we scientists and

engineers claim to believe in absolutely, prohibits a zero energy building. I encourage ASHRAE to get out of politics and get back to promoting and advancing the art and science of HVAC&R. We should be discussing improved energy efficiency. We should be discussing improved designs that accomplish the same goals with the use of less, or much less, energy. But, in my opinion, ASHRAE cannot drop the moniker zero energy building soon enough. It is misleading, hypocritical, and scientifically inaccurate. W. Science and engineering are on the side of Mr. Jones, so who am I to argue against such exactitudes? My ASHRAE Journal presidential address was intended to convey an important message about the need to address energy efficiency in existing buildings. In that message was our long-term goal as a Society to work towards the development of “net zero” energy buildings. I think that I got that right nine out of 10 times. ASHRAE, of course, is a technical society, not a scientific one, and our membership covers a broad segment of the industry, including engineers, designers, manufacturers, suppliers, building

owners, educators, governmental agencies, etc. We also serve a very broad marketplace as it relates to the built environment. As we travel down this path, it is clear that raising public awareness is almost as critical as advancing the arts and sciences themselves. It would be a shame if, in our vehement support of correctness, we fail to carry the message to those who count: consumers, building occupants and building owners. Just as “green and sustainable” buildings were very good marketing tools for USGBC, so is “zero” and more correctly “net zero” a great marketing tool in raising the public awareness of the need for more sustainable building design and operation. And that is what it is—a great marketing tool. Do I honestly expect the majority of new buildings to be “net zero” in the next 20 years—no. In dense urban areas the practical use of solar or wind are limited. Rather, I expect to see broad development of net zero energy communities with microgrids. But that is digressing into technicalities. As engineers we can significantly improve energy efficiency in buildings. In fact, the McKinsey Report indicated the potential for the United States to reduce building energy use by 23% by 2020 through building retrofit programs, while offering a 17% ROI. But even a well-insulated building with high-efficiency lighting and HVAC&R systems will fail to perform without informed building owners and occupants. We will certainly struggle with terminology as we move closer to our goal. Issues of site versus source, carbon versus fossil fuel, cost based versus net energy, gross versus net conditioned area, etc., will all come into play. And then there is embodied energy. I agree with Mr. Jones that we need to more carefully define our message and that zero energy buildings cannot exist. Beyond that, I am unapologetic for my message.
