COMMENTARY
Something Different
ASHRAE Journal usually sticks to building technologies, but we decided to publish the article by Roy Otterbein, P.E., Member ASHRAE, because it is an interesting and unusual application. The article is about Otterbein’s work as an expert witness in a murder trial. And this was not just any murder trial. This became known as the The Prom Night Murders in the book by Carlton Smith. The victims were a Lakeville, Ind., church pastor, his wife and two daughters. The pastor’s son was tried and convicted 13 years after the crimes. A crucial part of the defense was the drying time of a washcloth found wet at the murder scene. The defense contended this proved an unknown person had been at the scene when the son was at the prom. Fred Turner Otterbein is a former Handbook Committee chair, and helped write the chapters on evaporative cooling. He says he is glad he took on the case. “Somebody needed to do it. Everybody has the right to a fair trial.” IS AIR TRAVEL a health hazard? There are reasons for concern, according to Douglas S. Walkinshaw, Ph.D., P.Eng, Fellow ASHRAE. His column, “Germs, Flying and the Truth,” reviews some key research from 1988 forward. This topic is expected to be the subject of future ASHRAE research. “Airborne transmission implicates HVAC systems and crowding, rather than individual responsibility,” writes Walkinshaw. “Naturally, the industry is sensitive to this.” THIS COLUMN is one of six standing columns in this edition. We’ve always published standing columns, and all have been well received. Examples are Washington Report, written by ASHRAE’s Washington office, Emerging Technologies by a group at the U.S. Department of Energy and TIAX LLC in Cambridge, Mass., and Building Sciences by Joe Lstiburek, Ph.D., P.Eng., Fellow ASHRAE. I also should mention Refrigeration Applications by George Briley, Fellow/Life Member ASHRAE, who wrote for several years and is still missed. Lately, we’ve added columns on technical topics, international issues and research. Future editions will include columns for commissioning, and possibly energy metrics and monitoring, and building information modeling (BIM). The columns do not replace the technical features. Both articles and columns are peer-reviewed, although the review processes differ. The main differences are that columns are shorter and usually less in depth. Also, authors have more leeway to express opinions. THE BENEFIT of standing columns is that the Journal can cover more topics, which is important to reach the diverse ASHRAE audience. It also provides more flexibility to cover important issues and add interesting content. The most important reason is that we are competing for our readers’ time. We think publishing shorter, more varied content will help in this regard. We’d like to hear from you if you have an opinion. Send comments to fturner@ ashrae.org. We are always interested in feedback, especially when we do something differently.
