Replacement of the hot water baseboards with the dual duct air distribution system can provide free cooling and free heating for many hours. Operation and Maintenance. A measurement and verification plan was put in place to track energy use for the mechanical and electrical systems. Cost Effectiveness. No heating piping was used to serve the terminal zones, which resulted in substantial installation savings. Environmental Impact. The college implemented a green cleaning program, which standardizes green cleaning products and procedures throughout the campus. Innovation. Labs with more than one fume hood use sash position sensors to reduce airflows to minimum ventilation rates when the hoods are not in use. Operation and Maintenance. A systems manual was prepared for the project that provides full operating information to the staff to understand and optimally operate the commissioned systems. Cost Effectiveness. The project used BIM in design and during construction to coordinate decisions prior to installation. The process allowed for off-site prefabrication and minimizing of construction waste. Environmental Impact. Recycling efforts diverted more than 77% of the construction waste from landfills. More than 37% of the materials used in construction contained recycled content.

A plate to plate heat exchanger located in the vent unit was chosen instead of an enthalpy wheel because pepper spray and tear gas are used in emergency situations. Innovation. The major innovation for this project was the use of cast on-site radiant heating and cooling wall systems. Operation and Maintenance. A BACnet BMS complete with Web-enabled remote access and the ability to log all points in the building was installed and provides maintenance warnings for filter changes and all equipment warnings. Cost Effectiveness. Cost of the project was on time and on budget due to the use of integrated wall systems. Environmental Impact. CO2 was reduced by 740 tons per year and all of the cooling equipment in the facility uses nonCHFC refrigerant.
