vibration has not been a factor. This is not to say that sound and vibration is not an issue that needs more attention, but this particular arena is beyond my level of expertise, and so I would very much like to see it addressed. Since all of our diagnostic and troubleshooting is limited to actual field conditions, we have few resources to complete more thorough investigations as we are rarely able to do more comprehensive evaluation of a particular fan/duct system. Sutton G. Page, Member ASHRAE, Austin, Texas

in at 0.57 ach with a peak heating demand of 22,000 Btu/h for 2,900 ft2 of finished space. A $5,000 natural gas hookup would have standby fees that alone exceed the cost of propane (which is more payback that is not possible at 3 ach in a windy location). Another, much more complex design tested at 0.9 ach—not a simple ugly

box, but 1.5 stories with a gambrel roof, multiple dormers and a large bonus room over an attached garage. It’s really not as hard as Dr. Lstiburek makes out. Here’s a little hint: Frame the upper floor outside walls, then the roof, do the ceiling vapor barrier and drywall with 5/8 in. drywall before framing the inside walls,

Just Right and Airtight
In response to the May Building Sciences column “Just Right and Airtight” by Joseph Lstiburek, Ph.D., P.Eng., Fellow ASHRAE, some of what it contains may be appropriate for mild climate buildings, but certainly not for cold climates (e.g., 1,500 ft2 on two levels, typical of housing in Alberta; 24,000 ft3 at 3 ach translates to an infiltration load of about 130,000 Btu/h for sensible alone. Although these are not average infiltration levels, high winds do sometimes accompany design lows. Over my four decades in the building industry, not every building was tested, but each one tested passed at 1.5 ach at 50 Pa on the first try. In one case, we had to crack a window to get the instrumentation to read, and it was still below 1 ach. Why does it matter? Beyond avoiding occupant complaints, selling the concept of efficiency ultimately means making it cost effective, and managing infiltration volumes in cold climate areas is a costeffective strategy when heat recovery ventilation is used. Dr. Lstiburek was dismissive of the Passivhaus standard’s 0.6 ach requirement and had no idea where that came from. It is critical to making the primary annual heating budget of 15 kWh/m2, a heating demand that can be satisfied with a postheat system on a heat recovery ventilator. Now we don’t need a conventional heating system because a small hydronic or electric post-heat coil in an efficient (min. 75%) heat recovery ventilator can usually do the job (payback for investments in efficiency). A recent house came
