Whether the proposals are solicited from work statements or are unsolicited, they should include the following information: precisely what is to be done, by whom, under whose personal supervision; estimate of man-hours, materials, instruments and apparatus required, and costs for each; information regarding the investigator’s special expertise, experience, and/or ability that especially qualiﬁes the individual for the proposed research; identify the contribution, if any, from the research organization’s resources for conducting the project. A summary of recently completed research projects and instructions for obtaining results from those projects are provided as a regular feature of ASHRAE Insights and the “Research” page of the ASHRAE website. ASHRAE members, as a member beneﬁt, have free online access to the ﬁnal reports of the more than 800 research projects ASHRAE has sponsored since its formation from American Society of Refrigeration Engineers (ASRE) and American Society of Heating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHAE) in 1958. Grants-in-Aid ASHRAE grants-in-aid (GIA) provide $10,000 to each selected graduate student to conduct research in ﬁelds of interest to ASHRAE. In 2010–2011, 21 graduate student grants-in-aid were awarded. These went to: Bikash Acharya, University of Maryland; Aleksandar Andelkovic, Technical Science Novi Sad; Simge Andolsun, Texas A&M University; Stephen Bourne, University of Texas; Howard Cheung, Purdue University; Jordan Clark, University of Texas; Brian Fronk, Georgia Institute of Technology; Caroline Hachem, Concordia University; Vibhas Jha, University of Maryland; Kyle Konis, University of CaliforniaBerkeley; Abhinav Krishna, Purdue University; Ki Sup Lee, Purdue University; Shichao Liu, University of Texas; Wei Liu, Tianjin University; Raphael Mandel, University of Maryland; Peter May-Ostendorp, Georgia Institute of Technology; Ananda Nagavarapu, Georgia Institute of Technology; Kashif Nawaz, University of Illinois; Amanda Pertzborn, University

of Wisconsin Madison; Sugirdhalakshmi Ramaraj, Purdue University; Feini Zhang, University of Illinois. The highest-rated recipients, Aleksandar Andelkovic Technical Science Novi Sad and Ananda Nagavarapu Georgia Institute of Technology, hold the added distinction of being named the Life Members’ Club GIA recipients, and their grants are funded by ﬁnancial contributions from club members. The latest grants brought the total to $3,805,550 awarded to 558 students during the 44 years the program has been in effect. Recipients represent over 100 different colleges and universities. To be eligible for an award, the applicant must be a fulltime graduate student who is either currently working on, or proposing to work on, a research project that has relevance to ASHRAE. The student must also have a faculty advisor who will supervise the research. Applicants from all ASHRAE regions worldwide are eligible. Graduate student grants-in-aid applications can be downloaded from the “Research” page of the ASHRAE website (http://www. ashrae.org/technology/page/39). Faculty advisors must send completed applications and student transcripts to the Manager of Research & Technical Services, ASHRAE, 1791 Tullie Circle, N.E., Atlanta, Ga. 30329, no later than December 15 of each year. Research Expenditures The Board of Directors has approved $2,687,000 for research projects and grants-in-aid payments for ﬁscal year 2011 – 2012, but a large portion of this amount has already been committed to the approximately 75 active projects under way. Competing for new project funds are 18 tentative research projects and many other project topics in various stages of development. Active projects are summarized in this report. The summaries include: the title of the project, the start date, the end date or projected (P) end date, the names of the contractor and principal investigator, the sponsoring technical committee monitoring the research, earmarked co-funding, a listing of research strategic plan goals supported by this project, and a brief description of the project.
