Greenhouse Gas emissions up
WASHINGTON—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 17th annual U.S. greenhouse gas inventory shows overall emissions in 2010 increased 3.2% from 2009. The EPA says the trend is attributable to an increase in energy consumption across all economic sectors, due to increasing energy demand associated with an expanding economy, and increased demand for electricity for air conditioning due to warmer summer weather during 2010. VAV terminal units
In the March Emerging Technologies column, the sentence: “The terminal unit.... is the final piece of HVAC equipment in a VAV system...” ignores the register, grille or diffuser air outlet serving the occupied space. The selection of this air supply device is commonly based on outlet velocity for mixing, sound control and draft-free distribution of the conditioned air—cool or warm. When selected by ADPI or other method, there is a limit to the change in outlet velocity (caused by change in volume) that will not effect the outlet performance and thus the room condition. Allowing the VAV terminal to decrease to a small flow (to save energy) will defeat the outlet’s ability to distribute air as designed. During the heating cycle, the VAV terminal could be controlled to maximum volume to ensure the warm (90°F) air will mix and not stratify at the ceiling. Honeywell destroying CFC-11, 12
MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J.—Honeywell has begun destroying inventories of certain ozone-depleting refrigerants and selling the resulting emission reduction credits for use in California’s greenhouse gas cap-and-trade program. The company says it has already destroyed more than 27,000 lb of CFC-11, a chlorofluorocarbon refrigerant with one of the highest ozone-depleting potentials.
