surface as long as trichloramine is being released. If the initial concentration is high enough at the water surface, then the combined density of air and trichloramine will be high enough to slow down the turbulent diffusion process that drives the concentration down. What might the initial concentration at the water level be? Assume a typical natatorium (volume = 14,000 m3, water surface area = 1143 m2) having a diffused/diluted trichloramine concentration of 1 mg/m3. If the initial concentration is 35,000 mg/m3 (about 3% by weight) at 0.6 cm above the waterline, and this concentration is allowed to totally diffuse and be diluted through eight air changes with 30% outside air, the final uniform building concentration will be about 1 mg/m3. In this hypothetical example, the density of the initial trichloramine-air mixture at the water surface will be about 2.3% higher than 50% RH air. Two factors make source capture at the water level the best way to eliminate trichloramine: 1) the water surface is the source, and 2) the density very close to the water temporarily traps the highly concentrated trichloramine-air mixture near the surface where it can be removed before mixing with room air occurs. Randy Baxter, Greer, S.C.  Regarding “Designing IAQ in Natatoriums,” I have several comments and questions that I hope the author will address. It should be noted that there is only one manufacturer (to my knowledge) of the pool gutter "source capture" type exhaust, as indicated in Figure 1 of the article, and this manufacturer claims to have a patent pending. Furthermore, if energy recovery is desired, there is only one manufacturer of packaged natatorium rooftop equipment (to my knowledge) that is capable of recovering energy from the exhaust airstream while keeping it separate from the return (or recirculation) airstream. Obviously, limiting the number of available manufacturers increases contract prices. Although it seems reasonable that separate exhaust and return airstreams improve the indoor air quality—by exhausting the contaminant-rich air, and recirculating the cleaner air—is there really much difference between a low sidewall exhaust intake (close to floor level), and the gutter exhaust system proposed in the article? The author does not address this question, as his only cited study resulting in improved air quality compares a "top-level recirculation" system to the gutter-capture system. More importantly, it is not clear from this article whether the gutter-capture system is significantly better than a low sidewall return with mixed (un-separated) return and exhaust airstreams.
