BUFFALO, N.Y.— API Heat Transfer Inc. and ThermaSys Corp. have
merged to create a single corporate entity for a broad range of heat transfer
products, including those used in HVAC.

ALEXANDRIA, Va.—The Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration
Institute (AHRI) has awarded a contract for a research project (No. 8007) to
Trane U.S., Inc. The project will determine low-global warming potential (GWP)
refrigerants HFO-1234yf, HFO-1234ze(E), and R-32 and lubricants’ long-term
compatibility with materials commonly used in stationary air-conditioning and
refrigeration systems. The project began March 1, and will be completed

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
has announced that the Los Angeles metropolitan area has the most
Energy Star buildings in the U.S. for the fifth consecutive year. In addition

To Support Energy Research
GOLDEN, Colo.—The new data center at the U.S. Department
of Energy’s National Research Energy Laboratory (NREL)
will rank first in the world in energy efficiency. It also will be:
• A petascale supercomputer capable of performing at least
one quadrillion operations per second.
• The first high performance computing (HPC) data center
dedicated solely to advancing energy systems integration, renewable energy research, and energy efficiency technologies.
• The first petascale HPC to use warm-water liquid cooling
and reach an annualized average power usage effectiveness
(PUE) rating of 1.06 or better.
The $10 million HPC system made its debut March 12. It
will be built out this summer.
The system features a new component-level liquid cooling system, developed by HP, that will keep computer components within
safe ranges and reduce the number of fans in the back of the racks.
Also, high-voltage (480 V ac) electricity is supplied directly
to the racks rather than the typical 208 V, which reduces the
need for power electronics equipment, and minimizes power
conversions and losses.
Water supplied to the servers will be approximately 75°F
(24°C) and return from the server in excess of 100°F (38°C).
This waste heat will be used as the primary heat source for the
facility’s office space and laboratories. Data waste heat also will
be used under the front plaza and walkway outside the building
to help melt snow and ice.
Using 75°F (24°C) starting temperature eliminates compressor-based cooling and instead uses cooling towers. This allows
use of water as the heat exchange medium, which is much more
efficient than air.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Danfoss Turbocor Compressors has announced
the commercialization of TG310 compressors, released as a developmental
prototype in early 2012. The compressors use the ultra-low global warming potential (GWP), zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) refrigerant HFO-1234ze,
trade-named Solstice™ L13 by Honeywell. The company plans a commercial
production launch to Danfoss Turbocor OEM customers by mid-year 2013.

The data center actually costs less to build than comparable
data centers and is much cheaper to operate, said Steve Hammond, director of NREL’s computational science center.
“Compared to a typical data center, we may save $800,000
of operating expenses per year,” Hammond said. “Because
we are capturing and using waste heat, we may save another
$200,000 that would otherwise be used to heat the building.
So, we are looking at saving almost $1 million per year in
operation costs for a data center that cost less to build than a
typical data center.”
The HPC system will support increased efficiency and lower
costs for research on clean energy technologies including solar
photovoltaics, wind energy, electric vehicles, buildings technologies, and renewable fuels.
“Modeling and simulation capability is a key part of
advancing our technologies,” Hammond said. “It allows us
to do research we can’t do experimentally because it would
be too expensive, or would take too long if actual systems
were built. We can mathematically model and run numerical simulations that allow us to understand things through
direct observation.”
