ASHRAE prefers to see unsolicited research proposals submitted in either early May or December each year so there is
sufficient time to review the proposal prior to the Society’s
Annual and winter meetings respectively.
Whether the proposals are solicited from work statements or
are unsolicited, they should include the following information:
• Precisely what is to be done, by whom, under whose personal supervision;
• Estimate of man-hours, materials, instruments and apparatus required, and costs for each;
• Information regarding the investigator’s special expertise,
experience, and/or ability that especially qualifies the individual for the proposed research; and
• Identify the contribution, if any, from the research organization’s resources for conducting the project.
A summary of recently completed research projects and
instructions for obtaining results from those projects are
provided as a regular feature of ASHRAE Insights and the
“Research” page of the ASHRAE website. ASHRAE members,
as a member benefit, have free online access to the final
reports of the more than 800 research projects ASHRAE
has sponsored since its formation from American Society
of Refrigeration Engineers (ASRE) and American Society of
Heating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHAE) in 1958.

Grants-in-Aid
ASHRAE grants-in-aid (GIA) provide $10,000 to each selected
graduate student to conduct research in fields of interest to
ASHRAE. In 2012 – 2013, 21 graduate student grants-in-aid
were awarded. These went to: Rohit Andhare of University
Maryland, Martinus Arie of University Maryland, Rodrigo
Sebastien Barraza Vicencio of University of Wisconsin-Madison,
Jie Cai of Purdue University, Ying-Chieh Chan of Purdue
University, Chun Chen of Purdue University, Justin DeBlois of
University of Pittsburgh, Dhruv Hoysall of Georgia Institute of
Technology, Yang-Seon Kim of Pennsylvania State University,
Jared Langevin of Drexel University, Jared Levy of University
Maryland, Yirui Liang of University Texas-Austin, Dusan Licina
of National University of Singapore, Malcolm MacDonald of
Georgia Institute of Technology, Kristen Markham of University
Texas-Austin, Samantha Perkarscik of University of Kansas,
Aakash Rai of Purdue University, Shane Riley of University
Texas, Ryan Tanner of University Colorado-Boulder, Yu Xue, of
Tianjin University, Nicholas Zibin of Concordia University.
The highest-rated recipients, Jared Langevin of Drexel
University and J Yirui Liang of University Texas-Austin, hold the
added distinction of being named the Life Members’ Club GIA
recipients, and their grants are funded by financial contributions from club members.
The latest grants brought the total to $3,746,050 awarded
to 626 students during the 47 years the program has been in
effect. Recipients have represented more than 100 different colleges and universities.

To be eligible for an award this Society year, the applicant
must be a full-time graduate student in academic year 20142015, who is either currently working on, or proposing to work
on, a research project that has relevance to ASHRAE. The student must also have a faculty advisor who will supervise the
research. Applicants from all ASHRAE regions worldwide are
eligible.
Graduate student grants-in-aid applications can be downloaded from the “Research” page of the ASHRAE website under
the “Research” page or “Student Zone” page (www.ashrae.org/
studentzone). Faculty advisors send completed applications
and student transcripts to the Manager of Research & Technical
Services, ASHRAE, 1791 Tullie Circle, NE, Atlanta, GA 30329 by
no later than December 15 of each year.

Innovative Research Grants
The ASHRAE Innovative Research Grant was established in
2011 to provide seed funding for novel research which does
not fit within the current TC research activities, but deemed
to have the potential to significantly advance the state-of-theart in heating, ventilating, air-conditioning and refrigeration
engineering. The idea is to encourage out-of-the-box research
to complement the research proposed and guided by technical committees.
It is neither meant to supplement ongoing research nor
support (partially or fully) the development or improvement
of a commercial product. It is rather targeted to provide seed
money to encourage “blue sky research” that may otherwise
not be funded initially through other means.
The first two grants under this new program, with a potential
grant amount of $125,000 each, were awarded to the following
two proposals:
• IRG-0021, Smart Nanolubricants for HVAC&R systems –
Oklahoma State University – Lorenzo Cresmaschi
• IRG-0024, Biowall Research – Purdue University – William
Hutzel

Research Expenditures
The Board of Directors has approved $2,978,600 for research
projects and grants-in-aid payments for fiscal year 2013 – 2014,
but a large portion of this amount has already been committed to the approximately 60 active projects already under way.
Competing for new project funds are 17 tentative research
projects and many other project topics in various stages of
development.
Active projects are summarized in this report. The summaries
include: the title of the project, the start date, the end date or
projected (P) end date, the names of the contractor and principal investigator, the sponsoring technical committee monitoring the research, earmarked co-funding, and a brief description of the project.
