Cloud Computing 101
By DonalD l. Beaty, P.e., Fellow aSHRae

What is cloud computing? For a term that has seen a significant rise in popularity, it remains one that is difficult to clearly define…or perhaps that in
itself is an indication of the inherent abstraction that is cloud computing.
The context of cloud computing is the attempt to marry information technology (IT) strategies and overall business strategies. The rapid advancements of the former combined with the infinite variability of the latter
make for a myriad of possibilities of how to achieve an aligned outcome.
This is the driver behind why there are so many variants for the types and
models of cloud computing.
At its core, cloud computing involves meeting the
Internet-accessible and on-demand needs of compute
and storage resources for individuals and businesses
through a networked aggregation of hardware and software that is abstract or “clouded” from the end-user.
The cooling challenges of a cloud computing facility
involve being adaptive and flexible enough to cope with
an unguaranteed, limitless, “capacity on-demand” loadprofile, while still being energy efficient and resilient to
scheduled and unscheduled outages (e.g., equipment
maintenance, utility interruptions, etc.).
This column will attempt to simplify, explain and
organize the world of cloud computing including the
services that are provided and the models that are used.

Cloud Models
The terms services and models are sometimes used
interchangeably when describing the types of clouds that
exist. For this column, we will consider cloud models as
being the description of the physical arrangement of the
cloud infrastructure, and cloud services as what the end
user receives by using one or more of the cloud models.
The two main types of cloud models are defined as follows:
Public Cloud. This is the most common type of cloud
model and is typically considered for web-based applications used by individuals and businesses where the
application is essentially a one-shoe-fits-all type of
approach. The best examples of applications on public
clouds are web-based email (Gmail, etc.), social media

(Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) and online multimedia storage/hosting services (YouTube, Flickr, Snapfish,
iTunes). Since the scale of the combined customer base
is so large, the costs are amortized over a greater volume
and, therefore, this represents the lowest cost cloud
solution to the customer.
Private Cloud. This cloud is more akin to being considered as dedicated for a given application or customer
including being a part of the same physical location or
in a remote location and can be owned by the customer
or by a third-party private cloud provider. This type of
cloud is also much more customized to the exact needs
of that same application/customer based on a much
more interdependent influence by the customer (i.e., a
much greater say as to the cloud hardware and software
configuration).
As their names suggest, public and private clouds
differentiate by the degree with which the customer
controls the configuration and hence the relative privacy and security of the cloud (i.e., who has access to
the data). In a public cloud, there is very little influence on the part of the customer, and the only interface
is through the use of the web-based application. In a
private cloud, the customer can control access, the platform type and even the hardware used; but the capital
outlay is obviously greater.
