Growth, From Page 8
Some of the growth comes from
facilities that are reaching capacity
as the economy recovers and
demand increases. Plus, Markstein
said some companies are now looking
more to expand in the U.S. This
is especially true for heavy manufacturing
because the U.S. energy
infrastructure can provide dependable,
low-cost power.
Education includes both pub-
lic and private institutions and is
expected grow less than 1% in 2014.
It represents about 25% of the nonresidential
market.
Private education, said
Markstein, usually depends on
charitable contributions and took
a hit when stocks crashed during
the recession. It's recovering
with the economy with shelved
projects starting and new projects
contemplated.
Public education, which represents
80% of the sector, is still
struggling with taxpayers reluctant
to take on new debt.
Markstein doesn't see much
improvement in public education
until about 2015 when the housing
market recovers. "When people start
building new houses in new areas,
you are going to see parents complain
about overcrowding." he said. Source:

LEED v4 Debuts
At Greenbuild
PHILADELPHIA-The newest
version of LEED
launched at the 12th
edition of Greenbuild
International
Conference and Expo in
November. This much
anticipated update
includes materials
transparency, a new
prerequisite for metering
energy and water
consumption, and
Standard 90.1-2010 as
the new baseline for
energy performance.
"LEED v4 is a quantum
leap for LEED," said Rick
Fedrizzi, president, CEO
of U.S. Green Building
Council (USGBC).
LEED v4 also includes
new market sectors such
as data centers, warehouses
and distribution
centers, hospitality,
existing schools, existing
retail and mid-rise
residential projects.
Another new fea-
ture of LEED v4 is the
dynamic plaque, which
is being piloted at the
USGBC's headquarters
and tracks LEED performance
in real time.
USGBC also said
Greenbuild is expanding
its brand globally
with the addition of a
Greenbuild in Verona,
Italy in 2014.
Green efforts also
will include natural
ventilation and radiant
cooling to diminish the
need for air conditioning,
and all the latest in
glazing and concrete.

Apple's New
Mother Ship
CUPERTINO, Calif.-Apple's
proposed new Campus

says will be "one
of the most environmentally

projects on this scale
anywhere in the world."
Eighty percent of the
campus will be greenspace.
The 2.8 million

will use renewable

Long Payback for Triple-Pane Windows
RICHLAND, Wash.-Highly insulating triplepane
windows keep a house snug and
cozy, but it takes two decades or more
for the windows to pay off financially,
according to a report presented at
the ASHRAE-sponsored Buildings XII
Conference in Clearwater Beach, Fla.
The report is based on a study by
research engineer Sarah Widder and
senior staff engineer Graham Parker,
both at DOE's Pacific Northwest
National Lab. Using a pair of identical

manufactured homes, they replaced
one item at time in one home, such as
windows and water heaters, and compared
performance.
The team found that the newer win-
dows reduce energy use in the home
by 12.2%. But because of the cost of the
highly insulating windows, it would
take anywhere from 23 to 55 years to
see a return on the investment.
The team notes that there are indirect
benefits as highly insulating

windows reduce and nearly eliminated
condensation that can lead to
mold growth.
They also found that the low-emis-
sivity (low-e) coatings that reduce
internal solar heat gain, cut energy
consumption by almost 25% during
peak cooling times on hot summer
afternoons. That benefits utilities via
less demand on the grid at times when
demand and price are highest.
