The ASHRAE Headquarters
The ASHRAE archives show the 1982
dedication of the ASHRAE headquarters
was a festive, two-day affair. Featured
were speeches from government and
local officials, a get-acquainted luncheon, and an open house for ASHRAE
board members and honored guests.
The event culminated a two-year process that involved an elaborate evaluation of 28 prospective cities, including
staying in New York City. The committee in charge eventually settled on
Atlanta and a 30,000 ft2 (2800 m2) twostory office building built in 1965 for an
insurance company.
The move was dictated by a variety of
reasons, including the need for moderately priced office space and meeting
rooms, said then ASHRAE President Jack
B. Chaddock. There also was the desire
by ASHRAE leadership to own its headquarters building with room to grow.

number of advantages, including
financial ones," said Chaddock.

A PRIMARY achievement of the
2007 - 08 renovation was the creation of
a "living lab" for research by the Society
and its members. More than 1,300
points are monitored in real-time and
stored data are available to members
through the Internet. The intent is to
provide data on long-term performance
of different types of systems, and possibly link to other, similar high-performing buildings.
The renovation also added 4,000 ft2
(370 m2) of new space to create the
ASHRAE Foundation Learning Center.

400%. More than 80 non-staff meetings
were held here in 2013.
