Study: Women Often
Don't Stay Engineers
WASHINGTON, D.C.-Nearly 40% of women
who earn engineering degrees
quit the profession or never enter
the field. For those who leave,
poor workplace climates are
common reasons, according to
research presented at the American
Psychological Association's
Convention in July.
While women accounted for more
than 20% of engineering school
graduates over the past two decades,
only 11% of practicing engineers are
women, and only 9% of electronic
and environmental engineers are,
said Nadya Fouad, Ph.D., of the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
She presented findings from the
first phase of a three-year National
Science Foundation study that surveyed 5,300 engineering alumnae
spanning six decades.
While 62% of the women surveyed
persisted in their careers as engineers, 11% never entered the field,
21% left more than five years ago,
and 6% left less than five years ago.

for advancement and loss of interest

Trane Has HFO Chiller
TOKYO-Trane is the first company to
develop a line of centrifugal chillers that uses an HFO refrigerant.
The launch of the water-cooled
Series E CenTraVac chiller with
HFO 1233zd(E) was made in France
in June, according to the Japan
Air Conditioning & Refrigeration
News (JARN). It will be available
in Europe with capacities from
740 tons (2,600 kW) to 4,000 tons
(14,000 kW).
The Series E is AHRI certified and
allows for heat pump, heat recovery
and free-cooling applications. It also
allows for ice-enhanced cooling during peak demand.
HFO 1233zd(E) is a replacement
for HCFC-123. The HFO has a GWP
between 4.5 and 6, and an ASHRAE
