But the building team at Burns & McDonnell’s World Headquarters in Kansas City, Mo., has cooperated since 2006 to improve the performance of the facility, which was built in 1985. Lighting and plumbing retrofits, boiler replacement and converting to a hot-water/chilled-water variable volume pumping system all contribute to the building’s increased energy efficiency. Sustainability improvements include a storm water management system, bifacial photovoltaic modules and a green roof. 38 California Department of Education California’s Valedictorian The California Department of Education Headquarters, built in 2002, raised the bar for sustainable building practices in California. It is the first state office building to incorporate an underfloor air-distribution system and is the state’s first design-build office building. Sustainable practices used during construction are now part of the state’s green building manual.
