ContentS 18 Normand-Maurice Building Canada’s Green Prototype This $45 million CND building on the site of an abandoned foundry serves as the “green” prototype for Canadian government buildings. It houses the offices of the Naval Reserve, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and other federal offices. The building reduces energy use by 61% by combining geothermal and radiant technologies. It was built largely with materials recycled from the original foundry. This includes the preservation and re-use of the foundry’s original façade. 6 Two Harbors High School Lake Superior’s Remedy Faced with a declining student population, the Lake Superior School District replaced an aging high school and an elementary school with a larger energy-efficient facility. The new school is a model of energy efficiency and indoor air quality, with a system that combines displacement ventilation with radiant floor heating. The building cost 21% less than the Minnesota average for schools, and saves about $50,000 a year in operating costs. 2 HigH Performing Buildings spring 2009
