C o n t e n t S 6 A Grander View Simply Grand The main lesson to be learned from A Grander View, headquarters of Enermodal Engineering, is that mechanical systems don’t have to be complicated to work. The building design began with orienting the building east-west to minimize cooling and heating loads and maximize the potential for daylighting. Outdoor air first travels through concrete earth tubes to temper the air using the ambient temperature of the earth. A vortex filter and other elements in the rainwater cistern reduce sediment, eliminating the need for additional energy-consuming filters. 16 David Brower Center Green From the Ground Up The David Brower Center is home to organizations working for environmental and social justice. Therefore, the building’s footprint has been designed to be as light as possible by using energy-saving technologies and recycled materials. The building’s narrow floor plate, lightshelves and overhangs provide nearly 100% daylighting. The building itself provides cooling in warm weather using an inslab radiant system at night to precool the building’s mass. In addition, the Center is designed to use 40% less water than a standard system by way of a rainwater catchment system and waterless or low flow fixtures. 26 The Energy Lab at Hawaii Preparatory Academy Hawaii’s Living Laboratory K-12 students learn about alternative energy and test their own renewable energy systems at a living lab that last year produced twice as much energy as it used. The building has been designed to meet the requirements of the Living Building Challenge including net zero water, net zero energy, and the exclusion of materials considered harmful to humans and the environment. A natural ventilation system takes advantage of the mild climate. 4 HigH Performing Buildings spring 2011
