ASHRAE Meeting Planner - November 2012 - (Page 3)

AHR Expo®/www.ahrexpo.com Held in conjunction with the 2013 Winter Conference is the International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition (AHR Expo). Coming off the largest Show in its 83-year history, AHR Expo will return to the site of its largest Southwestern event on Jan. 28-30, 2013, at the Dallas Convention Center. The 2007 AHR Expo in Dallas occupied the entire convention center and attracted more than 47,000 total attendees, including over 28,000 visitors, from around the world to see the latest products and innovations on display from nearly 1,800 exhibitors. However, based on an improving economy and new HVAC&R innovations and technologies, the 2013 event could surpass the 2007 Show. Expo Hours Monday, Jan. 28................................................10 a.m.–6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29................................................10 a.m.–6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30..........................................10 a.m.–4 p.m. ASHRAE Conference registration includes admission to the AHR Expo. General Tours Let the locals show you their Texas, from Dallas to Fort Worth to historic Grapevine, Texas. Highlight tours allow you to sample a little of everything these cities have to offer: historic theatres, the old west as the cowboys experienced it, shopping, dining and entertainment. Also, don’t miss the Dallas Art District Tour which features world-renowned art, architecture and sculpture. If you’re looking to get away from the city, little Grapevine, Texas, offers a look at the lives of some of Texas’ first settlers. And don’t miss the tour of Cowboys Stadium, set to host Super Bowl XLV. Technical Tours Technical tours give you a first-hand look at how technology developed by ASHRAE members is implemented. Tours include Southern Methodist University, the Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center and Cowboys Stadium. Invitation to New Members, First-Time Attendees and Non-Members New members, first-time attendees and non-members are invited to mix and mingle with complimentary meet-andgreet from 2:45–3:45 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, Sheraton Dallas. Join us and let ASHRAE make your Conference experience as enjoyable as possible. Keynote Speaker Rocky Bleier had just been drafted for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1968 when he received a different kind of draft: combat duty for Vietnam. Though he was wounded in both legs while fighting overseas, Bleier embarked on a two-year road to recovery, and eventually pressed on to become one of the Steelers’ top leading ground-gainers, pass the 1,000-yard rushing mark in one season and contribute to four Super Bowl victories. His story is recounted in the book “Fighting Back,” which was recreated in the 1980 ABC-TV movie of the same name. His speech, “Be the Best You Can Be,” motivates audiences to keep on striving for greater accomplishments. He employs a dynamic style with real-life stories and brings it together with a warm, self-reflective humor to which audiences can relate. Bleier shares his remarkable story during the Plenary, 3:15 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 26. ASHRAE Certification ASHRAE’s certification programs recognize industry professionals who have mastered the knowledge and skills reflecting best practices in certain aspects of building design and operations. Earning this recognized, highquality industry certification can demonstrate your value to the design process and also serves as a springboard for continued professional development. ASHRAE has certified more than 1,200 HVAC&R professionals. ASHRAE’s six certification programs are: • Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP) • Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP) • Commissioning Process Management Professional (CPMP) • High-Performance Building Design Professional (HBDP) • Healthcare Facility Design Professional (HFDP) • Operations & Performance Management Professional (OPMP) Exams are administered in Dallas in conjunction with the AHR Expo. Visit www.ashrae.org/certification or e-mail certification@ashrae.org for more information. ASHRAE Learning Institute The ASHRAE Learning Institute (ALI) offers five Professional Development Seminars and 15 Short Courses to help industry professionals stay current on HVAC&R trends. ALI offers new courses on the air-to-air energy recovery, ultraviolet germicidal irradiation systems, combined heat and power efficiency, laboratory design and HVAC systems optimization. Instructors are chosen by ASHRAE on the basis of their practitioner backgrounds and understanding of the key concepts which need to be applied for successful engineering. HVAC Design: Level I—Essentials, Jan. 30–Feb. 1 Gain the fundamentals and technical aspects in designing, installing and maintaining HVAC systems that can be put to immediate use. The training provides real-world examples of HVAC systems, including calculations of heating and cooling loads, ventilation and diffuser selection using the newly renovated ASHRAE Headquarters building as a living lab. www.ASHRAE.org/hvacdesign Latest Publications Take advantage of the Winter Conference to pick up the latest publications from ASHRAE. Look for these and more new or revised titles in the Conference Bookstore: • Performance Measurement Protocols: Best Practices Guide • Understanding Psychrometrics, 3rd edition • HVAC Design Manual for Hospitals and Clinics, 2nd ed. • Thermal Guidelines for Data Processing Environments, 3rd ed. Student Program The Conference features many events catered to our student attendees. The Conference kicks off with a student welcome and orientation on Saturday at the Sheraton Dallas where students can find out how to make the most of their ASHRAE experience, meet other students and learn what events they don’t want to miss. A full student program is on Sunday and includes breakfast, lunch, a speaker, award presentations, sessions on student technical projects and concludes with a technical tour of University of Texas – Arlington. On Monday, the Student Congress meets, allowing student branch leaders to come together to discuss how to improve the ASHRAE student experience. Students can also attend a technical session sponsored by the Student Activities Committee titled, “Decoupling the Latent Load Through Psychrometrics.” Students and student branch advisors pay a $25 registration fee to attend the conference. Board of Directors Open Session Members are encouraged to share their thoughts and opinions on the operation and work of the Society with the ASHRAE Board of Directors during an open session at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, at the Board meeting at the Sheraton Dallas.
