ASHRAE Meeting Planner - May 2013 - (Page 2)
Technical Program
A new kick-off to the technical program is being
introduced. The event features 60-minute special sessions,
which are meant to be more interactive with audience
participation followed by a 45-minute networking coffee
break. The special sessions include panel discussions and
workshops.
Of special interest is the Technical Plenary featuring
a speaker from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE)
National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). NREL
is the DOE’s primary national laboratory for renewable
energy and energy efficiency research and development. The
session takes place from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Sunday, June 23.
In addition, another new feature is the Track Keynote
Addresses, which take place 9:45-10:45 a.m., Monday, June
24. Confirmed to date are:
• HVAC Systems & Equipment Track Keynote, Otto
VanGeet, National Renewable Energy Laboratory,
“Data Center Design”
• Research Summit Keynote, Shanti Pless, National
Renewable Energy Laboratory, speaking on NREL’s
new Research Support Facility”
The full technical program can be found at
www.ashrae.org/denver.
Denver Conference Technical Program Highlights
The Integrated Project Delivery mini-conference takes
place Sunday and Monday. IPD is gaining ground on
traditional design-bid-build or contractor-at-risk project
management scenarios, as successful IPD projects see
condensed schedules, on-time delivery, managed costs and
sustainable buildings.
The Energy Modeling vs. Measurement & Verification
track investigates trends in building modeling and the
realities of construction and O&M, such as systemic
construction issues that lead to long term non-performance
and training staff to operate a building as it was designed to
perform. Sessions include:
• BIM, Commissioning and COBie
• Measured and Simulated Building Performance, with
Emphasis on Existing Building Commissioning
• Quality BIM Objects for Lifelong Building Reality in
a Virtual World
• Benchmarking Commercial Building Energy
Performance
• Root Cause Analysis of Simulation and Performance
Dissimilarity
• Comparison of Software for an Office Building
Design in Mexico
• Laboratory Retrofit Case Studies
The Renewable and Alternative Energy Sources track
looks into new advances in alternative energy equipment
and new design strategies for engineers. Sessions cover:
• Renewable Energy Systems in an Era of Low PV and
Natural Gas Prices
• Moving Buildings and the Grid to a Renewable Future
• Optimization of Thermal and Renewable Energy
Systems
• Heat and Resource Recovery in Industrial AirConditioning Applications
• Energy Efficiency Financing
• Large-Scale Thermal Systems
The Mile High Efficiency and Equipment track looks into
new breakthroughs in equipment and building systems
that contribute to a building’s overall high-efficiency
performance.
HVAC&R Systems & Equipment and Fundamentals &
Applications tracks again feature a wide range of current
practices and trends in the industry.
Research Summit
A newly created Research Summit is being held in
conjunction with the ASHRAE 2013 Annual Conference.
The Research Summit comprises a major portion of the
technical program with some 30 sessions scheduled, of
which 22 are paper-based sessions.
Topics include cutting-edge absorption and
adsorption cooling technologies in cogeneration and
trigeneration; replacement refrigerants for R410A
and low GWP refrigerants through the Alternative
Refrigerant Evaluation Program (AREP); ASHRAE
District Heating and District Cooling Design guides;
Hotel
ASHRAE Headquarters hotel is: Sheraton Denver Downtown, 1550 Court Pl., Denver, CO, 80202. Rate: $189.

presentations of selected papers published in HVAC&R
Research—ASHRAE’s research journal; and modeling
transient conditions.
Paper sessions address energy modeling, smart grid,
heat transfer, thermal energy, field research on window
shades and plug load control, ventilation, climate impacts
of refrigeration systems, climatic data, fire and smoke
management, indoor air flows, performance of heat
exchanger designs, variable refrigerant flow, data centers,
predictive energy and comfort simulation methods,
and calibrating energy simulation models using field
measurements.
In addition, sessions on ASHRAE’s research program
describe its strategic plan, including where ASHRAE
research is headed and current projects, and how to
apply for ASHRAE research grants. The Society spends
$2 million annually on research projects.
ASHRAE Learning Institute (ALI)
ALI offers seven in-depth training courses including a
new Professional Development Seminar on Operations
and Maintenance of High-Performance Buildings and a
new Short Course on Optimization of HVAC Systems
and their Components. ALI instructors are recognized
subject matter experts chosen by ASHRAE on the basis
of their practitioner backgrounds and understanding of
the key concepts which need to be applied for successful
engineering.
The Full-Day Professional Development Seminars are
The Commissioning Process in New & Existing Buildings;
Energy Management in New and Existing Buildings; and
Operations & Maintenance of High-Performance Buildings.
The Half-Day Short Courses are Air-to-Air Energy
Recovery Applications: Best Practices; Optimization of
HVAC Systems and their Components; Commissioning
Process and Guideline 0; and Advanced High-Performance
Building Design
Welcome Party
6:30–8:30 pm | Saturday, June 22
Denver Art Museum | $55
The Welcome Party takes place at the Denver Art
Museum, a half-mile walk from the Sheraton. In addition
to several galleries being open, a caricature artist is there
to capture the fun!
Exhibits open during the Welcome Party are the Native
American and Western collections.
The Denver community has long embraced its western
roots, and, as the city’s premier visual arts institution, the
Denver Art Museum has collected and exhibited western
American art for over 50 years.
The Denver Art Museum’s American Indian collection
allows visitors to experience the artistic vision of
generations of American Indian artists from across
North America. From ancient puebloan ceramics, to 19th
century Arapaho beaded garments, to contemporary glass
work, the museum offers a look at the rich diversity of art
forms, histories and artistic styles coming from American
Indian artists and communities.

transform “Our Work” – what we do, how we do it, and
who we do it with, by becoming more global in outlook,
broader in scope, and more collaborative in approach.
